vunkl, check your math again. 1million in retirement income is not enough, unless you other avenues of incoming during that age. if you have 1 million and your 60, you would want to work at 60 rather than working at 70, when your income is dried up. saying again, you can invest in 401k, but if thats your only avenue, you can be in trouble. people who are investing in India, if they are doing that alone, they are again taking a risk. | ||

i feel that is another misconception. Indian inflation rate is much higher, and when compared to other avenues, they fall way behind. http://www.inflation.eu/inflation-rates/india/historic-infla tion/cpi-inflation-india.aspx check this, and compare with saving interst rates. its very marginal even when its positive. unless i have my calculations wrong. | ||

The answer is partially wrong. if you had to take money out during those years, that is if you were retiring during the time of recession, and if you were to take money out, then you would have lost quite a bit of money. it is always safe to diverisify even if you are invested in 401k. like the people who have invested in india could move to india for those few years and come back after the market is in good shape. there is never a single good way to do these, its just there should always be safer alternatives than another one. if you invested in indian propertie ONLY, you are in a risky proposition, if you invested in 401K ONLY, you are in another risky proposition. if you combine both, you are in better shape. | ||

in the same 70 years the inflation rate is about 3.5%. I can understand people buying properties in India for various reasons, but never understand people who put money in savings account. you would save more digging a hole in your backyard and hiding hard cash, over the years. a childrens piggybank is better than most savings accounts. | ||

Just curious to know why you are guys are sending money to India.. to support parents? to pay off loans/debts? to buy a property? or just for fun? For me, sending money to India doesn't make sense. Because Rupee is unstable If you invest in USA stock market index funds, you will a minimum of 10% return on long-term ?? |
