This has actually worked well overall. The claim of the state was also right - the number of students from south india(TN & AP) used to be much higher than the number from the north, when I studied there. It was mainly because of the reason that you stated - the number of students for each % was high in both TN & AP. With the introduction of BITSAT, I hear some sort of balance is achieved due to the common admission test and there is a near equal chance for all the students. All these private institutes always try to resist govt intervention in their administration and working style for very valid reasons - once you let the govt get in, decisions might not always be in the best interests of the students and academics, but, more tuned to the govt ideology and political theories. | ||

I dont see there is a 'mess' as of now.. It is just an apprehension that if the govt involves there will be a mess.. some times, it appears the most free thinkers/liberals are the ones who cant tolerate a dissent I dont see the so called 'autonomy' brought a great success for IIMs so far. None of them are in Top 50 B-schools in the world*. so, y not try something different? There are public institutes which performed btr than private or autonomous institutes and there are examples that shows the contrary. so, its not the 'involvement' that matters but the kind of involvement that matters. | ||

Before 2004 Rajasthan State Government tried to make BITS Pilani also autonomous. In fact, they had won the case in the HIgh Court, and BITS Pilani had to forcibly accept enrollments based on AIEEE scores, in the ranks of NITs, but not the JEEs.. The Dean, VC, and all the other big-wigs knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court, got a stay-order and eventually managed to get off the State's grip, within a year, including the enforcement of the admission criteria. Aa taravathe BITSAT vachhindi... The main point of the State's claim is that Percentiles based admission criteria was not uniform, since number of students in TN for every percent is more, compared to say Rajasthan, or Himachal. I remember, the main point of the Institution's claim was pretty straight-forward - If the Institute becomes Autonomous, then 50% Rajasthani students, and then 50% rest of the country admissions will be enforced. The Institution will then not be the Country's Leading Private Engg College. Somehow, they managed to convince, stayed away from becoming autonomous, and agreed to starting a uniform admission process. Government's policies on quality HIgher Education and Specialization have never been very good, considering the bureaucracy. Institutions would certainly prefer to stay away, and have their own say. I would love to believe that the government is a force for the good but the track record (across countries, across regimes, across generations) makes me believe otherwise. What is surprising for me is that it is the Communists who try to get the govt. to control everything under the guise of socialism and public good but here it a reasonably forward looking party like the NDA that is doing this. That is what is confusing. In fact, there is no overt agenda too that they can drive. If they want to amend syllabus in primary schools to remove the overt left leaning etc, then that is their viewpoint. But am still scratching my head to see what they will do with greater control of IITs and IIMs. They are anyway liberal in their economic outlook and sync well with the liberal ideas of the BJP. | ||

We were left with very little time to respond and it was too late for us to coordinate with other IIMs and batches. Deadline ended on Wednesday, so we have to use all other resources on social media, press and TV at our disposal. | ||

Contacts. A good friend's wife is a reporter there. At 2 pm saw that there was a debate planned, on scrolling on TV while having my my muesli lunch. Then called up my friend at NDTV, already been in touch with her since yesterday to see how we can get press involved, she was in jaipur on the raje case She immediately called up someone in Delhi, who called me up, so everything set by 3 pm , all within one hour. But alumni is very strong, even without her, i got 4 people who said they can get me on the debate. We will be strongly networked in the media, because many of our regularly buy media in TV, print, work through PR firms and Corporate Communications etc. So getting media access is not that difficult. We are putting our best foot forward, just doing our part. | ||

Thanks for your compliments. Came back some time back from the studio. I thought i would be nervous but went ahead like a breeze, thought it was first time live for me. Spoke to Nidhi Razdan for a few minutes before the start to give her some talking points and brief overview of the bill. So that eased my nerves. We were supposed to start at 8, Barkha and Shekhar Gupta was on the same floor, adjoining table. They wanted 5 mins more to discuss Lalit Modi, so Nidhi gave a brief backdrop and passed baton back to Barkha. We lost 5 mins due to that. We had to end just when things were getting heated with Sudhanshu mittal. I thought Ashis Nanda was very logical and sound, Rahul sounded a bit pompous, and that Rohtak guy sounded like a sarkari babu. I wanted to ask him where the heck is Rohtak. Nidhi Razdan felt we should do a follow up again next week if there is some progress.
