If someone says NTR was the 'sole reason' for Telugus Identity, he is a fool. Saidabad just spoke about NTR brining a 'unique identity' to Telugu people during the time and he is not entirely misplaced. Speak to your elders and everyone would agree that Telugu Identity was not much especially in Northern states till early 80's. To them, everyone was Madrasis. But because of the sensational victory NTR achieved in just 9 months, that too over Indira's Congress despite being 'just' a Regional Party, NTR's TDP and Andhra Pradesh received outstanding Press and Publicity Pan India, so much so that general public were forced to take notice of a state called Andhra Pradesh and Telugu speaking Community. To give a easy example, Just like Baahubali's magnitude of success forced Pan India public to acknowledge Tollywood and its talents, NTR's success was on a similar scale. Thankfully Indira was smarter than most and she understood that Politics is a long term game. Every political threat is identified and efforts shall be made to nullify them and every 25 MPs would make a major difference when it mattered. So what if Congress won 400+ seats? Indira had already faced a jolt in the 1977 elections and came back to Power in 1980. But despite her issues, AP was always with her. It was her bastion. To lose your strongest bastion required someone special and that was NTR. To lose a state is to weaken for upcoming elections. And for the first time ever, her own undeniable magnetic Charm was overshadowed by someone else in the Election Campaign. IG also understood she cannot be forever assured of 400+ seats always. And while attempts were made to unify opposition before, they were never a serious threat from the South. NTR rose from the South, taking RK Hegdey along with him apart from the major Non COng parties from North. Together they were becoming formidable as was evident eventually in the 1989 Elections . And this was just 4 years after Indira's assassination. She had every reason to be wary of Unification of Opposition and NTR was at the forefront causing issues to her for the first time bridging Southern Power to Northern Opposition. And no seasoned politician basks in their glory ignoring threats and Indira was no no novice. No wonder she jumped at the opportunity provided by Nadendla when he misguided her that he had the required strength.
