I am sure we all discussced these issues, although not ideal.. this is what we are left with. Prior to independence, most temples were under control of kings and princely states, and this is not just temples.. institutions related to other religions as well. After independence, there were inheritance issues with these temples, just like there were problems with managing princely estates. In some cases, there were some trusts created that handled the management, but in other cases, the control was transfered by to the government. I also remember, there a few famous Dargah's that are managed by and controlled by indian government. There is another side to why there is hindu place of public worship laws that these temples need to abide by. Ofcourse, most folks today, see this more as a government indulgence, and interference in hindu religion matter, and may be it is time to get temples that are capable being managed to be transferred over to their own boards. sort of privatization of temples - but i know there is easy trouble to brew before that happens. | ||

hmmm I have heard of this book. Allowing hindu women into hindu temple, is breaking india - somehow not convincing to me. There were religious insitutions that have been trying to demoralize the hindu psych, there is no question about it. This however, seems to be a more internal issue. I am not saying outsiders are not going to take advantage of it, but if the internal issue did not have some merit, it could have not reached this far. The compounding problem is Ayyappa does not fall under any major power matt traditions. so there is no documented reasons, other than tradition. | ||

Sabarimala had always barred entry of women of certain age - almost agree to it. the reason is/was that Ayyappa was a Naisthika Brahmachari, and young women were not allowed to offer their prayers/services - which could deviate the intense celibacy observed by Ayyappa. - thats the belief. The problem to me is with the Hindu Place of Public worhsip laws. these laws does not allow, the discrimination of granting entry to any Hindu on the basis of gender or any other social status. As long as a temple, is getting funded through the State or Central government or is being managed by these entities, they have to abide by the laws and by-laws. Swamy Ayyappa temple is not a "private" temple, and cannot go against the discretionary laws of hindu public worship laws, as it was being funded and managed by state of Kerala from a long time I am really surprised that the temple management and state government could not provide a convincing argument to allow the temple to stick to a tradition they have been following forever. | ||

caste is not natural might be a reason for you, but i am sure you can understand that there will be people who will say other wise. based on your karma and what not. you are just trying to reason - why something can be allowed and some cannot be. the reason can change by individual. like i said, it should not matter to me as a devotee, its up to the temple. about 16yr marriage - it is in line with what i am saying. some can want a 16yr marriage, but its upto the law of the land. if someone wants and has valid reasons, the law can change, until then they cannot be married legally. same here. until the temple changes it decision, women cannot enter, but it does not mean temple cannot be asked to change its decision.

like i said, its upto the temple management. its the temple management decision that needs to be final. if the temple has decided one way or the other, the rest should abide. it does not matter what 1 lakh people think or 10 people think.
