First of all Goonda good job... It seems a big hassle because u need to take minor precautions like carrying 200-300$ and probably not informing the banks or CC companies....i had trouble twice ...as soon as u leave USA and reach india ur CC are put on hold if u try to access it without informing the CC companies before hand...this time i called all my CC and banks and no problem with accessing my online accounts also....otherwise what he tried to do is more than commendable and wouldnt have taken such a long time.... yeah the Customs people should be allowed to take payments thru CC or debit cards....should be implemented pronto | ||

intake mundu rules were you can carry upto 1kg of gold if you stayed more than 2 yrs abroad.. That's what I was hoping too..didn't know about the new rule that you got to pay 36% if your stay is less than 6 months and 10-14% or something if over 2 yrs. I would have walked out if they let me go. | ||

I am not boasting of what I did... I am proud of my self of what I did and could inspire more people to do it. This past weekend I travelled to India. I carried 2 yellow metal bars and iPhone along with me. There was a carry-on baggage check before you pick up the checked-in luggage. I put the bars in my laptop backpack. After the laptop went through the scanner, custom's official asked me if I am carrying gold bars. I replied yes and said there are 2. He took my passport and said while leaving, go to counter 2 to pay the taxes. I agreed and went ahead to pickup my luggage. and after picking up luggage, I went to counter and told that I was there to pay my taxes on luggage. As I was not carrying my older passport, he doesn't know how long I have been out of India. I told the date, the last time I left india and also showed my kids passport. He agreed and asked me how much cash I have. I said all I have is 75$ and asked him about the tax, he requested me to talk to his superior and sent to another room. There, the superior took to me to another room and started negotiating and asked me how much I can pay to him so that I don't have to pay tax of Rs.17,800. I replied saying that I don't have much money on me and I am ready to pay the full tax. He asked couple of times are your sure you want to do this? you can get away with less amount than what you going to pay. I said, I am sure. We in US talk about corruption but when we get a chance to get away, we just pay and move away... I don't want to do that, I am willing to pay the full amount. Custom's official, laughed and told, good thing, very few people do this. All the money goes to govt. and requested me to pay the money in Foreign currency. Now the struggle starts. According to bank, the amount is 280$. but I have only 75$, so I asked him to use my credit card to pay the amount, as he is willing to use chip cards on CC machine. Machine gave message that the transaction can't go through. he tried couple of times and told he can not process. I gave him my debit cards, he said they are not chip enabled, he can't process them as it incurs 2$ to bank and he can not cover as part of the payment. I called the Citi bank from here and talked to customer service rep and told that I am in india and trying to make transaction and they need to take the security setup on the card. She agreed for that and despite that the bank CC machine was not able to process. I said to Bank guy that I will pay the 2$ separately and asked him to make a transaction on debit card, check and another local bank. Both didn't go through. The bank official said to work with customs guys or find 280$. So, I went to money exchange center in airport as requested for $'s. He said, he doesn't have it, but the one outside airport has it. So, I requested CISF personal and went out to another money exchange place. The lady in counter said, she has, but I need to pay cash of Rs.15900 for 205$ as I had 75$ already. so I went to ATM and got the money( only 10k was allowed on my debit card for some reason) and paid her to get the 205$. The exchange rate I paid was Rs.74.5/$. I finally got $'s. went ahead and paid the money, came out. In the mean time, friends and parents were telling me.. why couldn't you settle with them. I refused and it took more than 2 hrs to get this all done.. during this time kids were sitting with luggage(went alone with kids). Despite all the wastage of time and struggle.. I am happy of what I did and I hope more and more people do the same(paying the fees) rather than promoting corruption. |
