Source: Reddit Bachar al-Assad was the dictator of Syria. He is an Alawite (an ethnical and religious minority in Syria, but they held the power), member of the Baas party (just like Saddam was in Iraq), which has a secular, nationalistic ideology. He was brutal with everyone he didn't like or saw as a threat, but he controlled the country, which was relatively stable and prosperous. Then came the Arab Spring, first in Tunisia, then in other nations, mainly Egypt, Libya and Syria. Unlike Ben Ali in Tunisia, though, Assad's answer has been very... Assadesque. Bulldoze the sh*t out of everyone. First, it was violent repression, then when it wasn't enough, full-blown war. Soon, the country turned into a massive civil war between the regime and the opposition, and the country was a complete wreck. Total chaos. This allowed islamist extremists, who were already numerous in Iraq due to the chaos there, to become increasingly powerful, as they were now uncontrolled, unchallenged, benefiting of the chaos. Not only that, but they could recruit tons of despaired people hoping they could be a solution. This is how ISIS took its current form. For a long time, nobody wanted to have anything to do with Syria. There are several reasons for that but the main one was basically "each time we interveined in a middle-east country, it only made shitxs worse and it became a quagmire for us", then progressively as ISIS became a bigger and bigger threat, more and more countries decided to fight them. There are now several western and non-western countries fighting against ISIS in Syria, but most have no troops on the ground and are only doing airstrikes. As for the no-fly zone, I believe the main rationale behind it is that it would prevent Assad to keep massacring people and even allow the non-ISIS opposition to perhaps gather more strength and fight back against Assad (the civil war between the regime and the non-islamist opposition is still going on, it's just that there's a third belligerent in the name of ISIS that is SO MUCH louder that the focus is really on them). But more and more, there is the idea that realpolitik implies we live Assad alone as he could be an ally against ISIS (by far our biggest problem) and some might even say he may be the only one able to restore some level of stability inside the country, even if he's still not a democrat and never will be. Besides, even the non-ISIS opposition against Assad is far from being islamist-free. And finally, Russia is more or less allied with Assad and doesn't want an idea that would allow Assad's regime to collapse, and it's not exactly the appropriate time and place to start a war with Russia. | ||
