If you try to find an objective definition for something which is purely subjective, you will be disappointed big and long time. Why do you think psychology is such a difficult science to study? . Like everything else in this universe, objectivity has its limitations. Perhaps the closest objective definition in my point of view would be god is that singularity from which everything else in this universe, including the universe itself, originates/emanates/manifests (each of these verbs has evolved in to different systems of belief). That singularity which explains everything. Practically speaking though, faith is a coping system for most people. Most of the self-inflicted wounds in our lives are caused by an unstable mind. Similarly, most unfortunate accidents in our lives can cause instability of the mind. Depending on the method you choose, faith stabilizes this unstable mind, it pacifies a grieving mind, gives hope to a depressed mind, gives peace to an anxious mind etc. For intellectuals, its a fascinating hobby to study it. So its a good thing, and every good thing must survive. What say? | ||

On the contrary, when atheists do some religious rituals or marriage etc. they do it purely as a means of going the easier route albeit not the correct/sensible route. Also, in my experience, the non-believers I know have always stood by their belief through tough times, easy times, facing challenging questions from people with other beliefs etc. but the religious people are constantly in doubt within themselves as to whether their beliefs are really true...all the people on this DB, irrespective of whether they are theists or atheists can calmly recall their own belief and the consistency of it. There is a huge difference between the two. People who spend time on this DB know exactly what they get from that. If it just timepass, they know it is so and are doing it as a passtime. However, most people who I know spend time at temples expecting miracles to happen. They believe that there are some supernatural powers at that place. Somebody can listen/sense what they want and is capable of influencing it positively in their favor! Such false notions shouldn't be allowed to pervade! I am sure people wouldn't spend so much money and time in building, maintaining and visiting religious institutions if they don't have such false notions that there are supernatural powers. And almost everybody I know believes these supernatural things the way they have been taught during their childhood when they were too naive to use their own judgement. For instance, a person raised as a Muslim during childhood doesn't believe in idol worship at all (in fact considers it a sin), whereas a Hindu raised person believes in it! Clearly, there is a systematic flaw of cheating innocent minds and that is lasting a lifetime in many cases (but not in some cases like me). | ||
