bhayya, don't mind, but dont agree with this. figment has got nothing to do with the budget involved in a scene. granted there are alot of screenplay issues in this movie. excitement ki imagination ki relation ledhu. the movie has major issues than this. redundant scenes are the core of the movie, but sukumar failed in potraying the point, but not because he wanted to make up for the time in the movie. songs are unnecessary and i agree, songs had alot to be ignored.
kid by the time he realizes what he is, and tries to find out who he is , is already labeled amnesiac, and sukku failed to stress on that.
i agree with this. the fights lacked emotion.
and to be frank, this is one thing i like about sukumar's characters. his characters are not built forward but are retrospected in most cases. the character appears bizzare and even in his earlier movies need to be connected back. ofcourse not everyone will or should like this type of narration.
mahesh fan ani oppukunnaru already, andhuke emo. i dont think its just writer and director's fault. its a really tough role, i dont think anyone in current indian films can live up to the character easily. i was thinking who would have fit and or performed that role well.
Sukumar did fall into the trap. a secret that needs to carry over a generation, how can it be passed on, without the person who needs to share the secret being alive, and the person who needs to know it, is a kid? with in the limitations of the technology that existed between two generations. I can feel for the problem Sukumar was in here. I cant claim superiority of though here as i cannot come with a better way. And yes the movie is a flop rightly. not a well done movie. btw, the actress did well, but was she really needed  | ||

I would rather say that a Dookudu or AD are more honest in that they have no qualms about what they are doing, how they are marketed, the audience they are targeting etc....the biggest crime in One is that it is not entertaining, whether it be slapstick or otherwise...that is why i say that Rajamouli is the best in the industry, he can tell a difficult story easily rather than making easy things complex. The story of the rebirth as the fly in Eega was so seamlessly built in.... Take my yesterday's thread on Venkatadri express, super gripping, has come comedy, some adventure, clean screenplay etc. Even movies like Gunde Jaari, Ishq were all well told stories without pandering to the Lowest denominator too much. | ||

Buffy bro, while I kinda liked One movie, I have to agree to many of the points you mentioned. But as is pretty obvious in today's Telugu Masala commercial cinema, which of the recent movies are devoid of blunders? Its almost like our movies ask us to leave ur brain at home and come to theatre. Why? Our Industry Hit AD has tons of blunders. But bottomline here is One did not do something which is paramount to the typical Telugu audience. One has failed because it did not 'entertain'. People's views on Sukumar fall into two buckets - one who feel that he is a brilliant screenwriter and the other who feel that he is a great writer who fails to bring his views across to the audiences. My views are a third - that he is a damn charlatan who has been able to pull a wool over producers eyes and luckily not of audiences. In the land of the blind (which is our producer's la-la land), the one eyed man is king. The problem with people like false gods is that people may turn a blind eye when Moses comes along. If screenplay writing is Sukumar's forte, then 1 is a showcase of his confused and immature thinking. It is like someone did not grow beyond their Secret Seven or Famous Five - Rubik's cube, storage lockers and keys..how fantastically inventive. The entire screenplay is a mess - take the fight sequence in Goa with speedboats, yacht blowing up etc on which the producer might have spent a couple of crores. One does not feel any sort of excitement at this - the reason being that every scene is shown as being a figment of the hero's imagination. We feel that this too is a figment - so we do not feel engaged. The entire first half in Goa turns out to be a mess of contradictions, clutter, repetition. The movie is overlong, even the ending where Mahesh finds his family home is another 10 minute stretch of boredom. For a thriller, the worst thing is to be boring as a thriller is supposed to thrill by nature. However the repetitive, redundant scenes and unnecessary songs leave little time to push the story forward. 1 deserved to be a flop not because it was confusing or clever (it was a schoolboyish story) but because it condescends to the audiences. Audiences are clever enough to question the makers - why does Mahesh not dig out the Camera SD card until so late into the movie, why is it so difficult to find out the family of the kid (the police could have checked out which hotel he was staying in, his school name in UK etc etc)., etc etc. The audience should be made a participant in the proceedings, not shown some undercooked scenes and asked to digest. The much spoken about fights and chases are yawn inducing. Directors do not realise that fights are not about cars, bikes and explosions. If there is no character buildup - one does not feel involved with the characters and their fate, and this leads to a disengagement with the scene. This is one of the major faults with the movie, not just the fights alone. Take the case of Shiva, where Ganesh running after Sudhakar with an axe is so terrifying, even after 25 years. This is because you genuinely care for the character. Mahesh appeared to act through the movie with a single expression, of someone who has just sat through a Rahul Gandhi interview. Again it is not his fault, it is the director-writer's in not developing his character - they could have shown him trying to learn about his past, do some investigation, going to Goa and chilling out in a yacht with two fingers pressed against his temple is not character development, it is laziness both of the character and the director. The songs are BGM are tired, the songs are misplaced, the editing is bad - i don't have anything worthwhile to write about this movie. The 1 rating is only due to the actress who did a fairly good job, this being her first movie. |
