There is an old Proj Mgmt adage - scope, cost , time/quality - prioritise any two.. For me scope and quality were important , cost was not a constraint so i picked a lot of upgrades.., For someone in a tighter budget you can pick and choose what matters to you .. E.g base cruise cost us about 6 k fir balcony suite - you can get an interior cabin for half the price of just skip the cruise.. Goldstar dome class on the train is almost double adventure class - and if you are doing tge trip weekdays - they have 1 for 1 free coupons so plan accordingly if you have the flexibility - i did not Crab feastexcursion - was 159 per person - may not be everyone's idea of a good time Hotels cost me 300-400 a night - there are more economical options available ..if you do just land tour and have a more relaxed schedule so don't let the 15k scare you awayThe foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim | ||

Most of the Alaskan tourism is in southern part where you see lot of greenery. Iceland is much more northern and colder, so less greenery and more of marsh lands. Just to compare, we flew to "Point Barrow", northern most point of Alaska which looked similar to Iceland. It is so cold out there, even in summer, grass cannot grow because there isn't enough warmth. The natives catch fish, dig a whole in the ground and store. It serves as freezer to preserve their fish. I took a dip in Arctic ocean and received a certificate to be member of "Polar Bear club" | ||

We did a 2 week vacation in Europe covering 7 countries. I would rate Europe as better place for history buffs. Coming to nature and landscapes, they look artificial and man-made compared to Alaskan wilderness. They are quite different and good in their own way. | ||

jet lag tho poddhunne lechi koorchunna... chesedi emi leka DBing. We did our Alaska trip 9 years ago, came out to be $6K without cruise (inflation may be). The adventure for us was, taking our 2 year old daughter to mountains, glaciers, sled rides Even though my wife is vegetarian, I am avid food lover. Before I walk into a restaurant, I inquire about local delicacies and then check for their specials. I don't mind asking the chefs to try their best to impress me. After couple of days of scenic train from Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks, we rented a car and traveled for a week, covering all the interior towns. The greenery and landscapes are amazing. Overall, it is worth a trip to visit Alaska. So far, we convinced a friend and they made their trip couple of years ago. | ||

Norwegian food was excellent, it was completely freestyle no formal dress requirement - liked it a lot better than Carnival

Day 6 : Was a sea day , so enjoyed the view from the balcony and observation deck as we sailed to the Hubbard Glacier and towards Icy strait point while gorging on the food and relaxing ï Day 7 : Port of Call at Icy strait Point. Took the forest tram tour to get some insight into the ecology of the rain forests, and then attended a Tribal dance performance and joined in to their dance.Lots of folklore there Interesting stuff..Had a quick snack of donuts, potato tornado and crab bisque and started the worlds longest zipline adventure. It took a 45 minute bus ride to get up to the launch point 1500 feet high in the cliffs. And it took 90 secs to come down the mile long zipline hitting a speed of 60+ mph⦠an exhilarating ride and view.Must do for the not so old/not so queasy/non vertigo ridden people Then back to the ship: food , cruise activities , food , sleep. ï Day 8 : Port of Call at Juneau . Only had 4 hours. Hired a taxi went to Mendenhall Glacier. Took the 1, 1.5 mile hike to the base of the Nugget Falls -well worth the walk. Beautiful vantage point to see the falls and the glacier. Then to the Salmon hatchery and got an education in how the wild salmon hathery processes work -amazing to see the salmon swimming and jumpings upstream to spawn etc. From there drove to the gold mine museum ( the location and the gold creek views were was good , the museum was not impressive) Got back to the ship noonish. Day 9 : Port of Call at Skagway Took the White pass Yukon Rail train up and down to Summit. Amazing engineering marvel-train climbs 2850 feet into the mountains in 1.5/2 hours-fabulous views again. Day 10 : Port of Call Ketchikan Went on the Wilderness and Crab feast shore excursion. We love food and love crab and this was recommended by a friend...it's a boat ride where they demonstrate crab fishing , show some wildlife and then bring you a crab buffet â our boatman had a knack of being able to whistle to bring bald eagles to pick fish he threw. But the highlight was the all you can eat Dungeness crab and they had a competitions between table son who can stack up the highest crabshell pile...yummy Back to the ship for more partying and more food ï Day 11 : Sea day sailing past another glacier and more gluttony Day 12: disembark at Vancouver. Day 3 : Original plan was to trek in the morning and do the 6 hour drive to Matanuska to do the Ice fall trek at 4.30-7.30 and drive to Anchorage to spend the night. We had swapped trek and flightseeing so left at 5 am for Talkeetna. It was clear day so was upbeat about doing the flight seeing and started driving to talkeetna at 5 am to reach Talkeetna by 8 am. In the 3 hours weather changed twice between sunny and cloudy and the flightseeing was still a no-go. So did some replanning again. Called Mica Guides and advanced the trek to 11.30. Had a brunch enroute at Wasilla and reached Matanuska - fantastic drive. Reached Mica guides,waived our lives, donned the boots, got the crampons and off to the glacier we went. Did the 3 hour Ice fall trek on Matanuska Glacier. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing and learning about the glaciers, the glacial silt, moulins, hearing the water rushing under our feet, learning how to climb the ice,and trek across it. Must do if you are in a decently fit shape. Not for old people ( and I did it ,so I am NOT old). Wrapped up with a glacial melt after the trek - ice-cream with a shot of espresso poured over it and started driving to Anchorage. This time we had time to stop along the drive, so made multiple view/photo stops along the scenic drive. Reached Anchorage by about 6.30 pm , checked into Comfort Inn, Ship Creek . I had booked that hotel cos its 2 mins walk from the train station. Went to dinner at the Bridge ( a quaint local seafood restaurant bridging the creek ) - food was a little pricey but fabulous after dinner returned the rental car and relaxed. Day 4 : Breakfast at 5.30 am and headed to the railway station by 5.45 to take the Coastal Classic train to Seward. Booked the Goldstar Dome and it was worth every penny ..Considered the most scenic rail route in the US-it was beyond description and the glass dome roof gave unobstructed view . You can turn the seats around so the family could sit facing each other which enhanced the experience.4 hours of view after breathtaking view and great commentary ï Kenai Fjords Cruise with Major Marine Tours shuttle was at the station to take us to the harbor to board the boat. Absolutely fantastic â saw tons of marine wilde life â Orca whales cavorting , school of Dahl Porpoises flitting around , sealions, puffins , and other birds...and then watching and listening to the Holgate Glacier Calve. Loved the tour and the salmon rib buffet was good too.Food is always important ï Got back to the small boat harbor and took the Park Connection Coach back to Anchorage. Day 5 : After breakfast went to the Aurora show ( avoidable-as it was only a series of pictures) ..walked back thru the city, checked out the ULU factory (a store selling ULUs- a special curved Alaskan knife) and back to the hotel to be ready for our ride to whittier to board the cruise ship. I had booked the wildlife tour ride. Boarded the bus at 1 , stopped at the Beluga point and the Wildlife conservation centre to see bears, caribou, musk oxen, water bison and other residents of the centre.Beautiful location surrounded by mountains. A brief photo stop at Portage glacier and then we were on route to embark. Alaska trip review : It was a dream vacation. Everything I had heard before I went there was true and more Being foodies , my boys wanted to go on a cruise and I wanted to cover the land parts so we did a blend of the two. Vacation constraints restricted the land part to 3.5 days so packed a lot into that time and then relaxed on the cruise. Had a shaky start but then everything went well. Day 1: Flight into anchorage got delayed and we did not reach Talkeetna till 4.30 am. Got only 3 hours of sleep Day 2: Plan was to do the flightseeing/glacier landing at 8 am but due to foggy , cloudy sky - Flightseeing was a no-go for the 8.30 - so had to do some quick replanning. Took in the views from the Lodge , Had a great breakfast , with reindeer sausage while waiting till 9.30 to see if the weather would clear enough for the trip but it did not so decided to reschedule flightseeing to next morning and started early to Denali. Learnt that Alaska weather changes every hour Beautiful drive to Denali so took our time stopping for views/pictures at various points including Hurricane Gulch - the highest bridge . Reached Denali by 12.30 - checked into the Hotel (Denali Bluffs) and took off to the Denali National Park. The initial plan was to hike the next morning but due to the reschedule decided to do the hike that afternoon. Hiked the savage river trail, about 2.5 miles: saw huge Caribou, ground squirrels along the river. Nice drive thru the park to the trail and back. Drove to the Sled dog kennels and watched the Husky demonstration .. Food is paramount so went to the Salmon Bake place and had a great dinner of crab cake, yak wraps, elk sliders, and ofcourse salmon. And we were ready for Denali raft pick up. I had booked the rafting on Class 3- 4 rapids Given that neither he nor I swim , hubby thought I had lost it and that was before he knew I could have picked a calmer class 1, 2 rapids option Reached the place , got into the gear-goretex dry suits, waterproof booties and gloves and were driven to the river.They warned us you will be ok for about 5-10 minutes in the freezing water if you fall overboard, but then ram jaane, and hubby's alarm level rises. We reach the river, boys want to ride in the front, hubby at back - but he was outnumbered so at the front we are. Ride of our lives2 hours of Class 2, 3, 4 rapids continuously being sprayed by freezing glacial water ( the guide/pilot called it a glacial facial)..thoroughly enjoyed the adrenalin rush and the boys even jumped into the river at the end of the ride in a calmer spot of the river Back to the hotel and sleep.
