Telegu star-kid Ram Charan bursts on the screen as the macho cop, flaunting his ribbed abs and muscles with immense flamboyance. The staple aviators, gruff voice and broody expressions complete the look. Bu, it remains constant, never allowing us to experience Ramâs versatility. That aside, his Hindi diction, chiseled body and action drills are top-notch, but just not enough to match Bachchanâs iconic screen image. Movie goes and critics would agree that its almost impossible to recreate and restructure the magic/impact that the 1973 Zanjeer starring Amitabh Bachchan and Pran, has left on the minds of the audience. And director Apoorva Lakhia seems to have understood that well. Story: Except the title and main story premise, the remake âZanjeer â is in many a story told for the modern times. Stepping in the shoes of Amitabh Bachchanâs character Vijay is southern star Ram Charan. An upright and honest police officer, he gets transferred from station to police station for chasing after corrupt underworld goons. He is then given the charge of a case, where the eye-witness Mala (Priyanka Chopra) to a murder by Tejaâs (Prakash Raj) goons refuses to cooperate. Teja on the other hand is the head of an oil mafia operation and wants her dead. Mala also plays the love interest of Vijay, hence bringing a romantic angle to the otherwise action-filled storyline! Another important character of the movie is of Sher Khan, an immortal role in Hindi cinema, played by late actor Pran. In the remake Sher Khan,played by Sanjay Dutt, deals in the business of illegal cars and his encounter with Vijay is a crucial part of the film. Review: Director Apoorva Lakhia manages to keep essence of the original, as the story follows Vijayâs fight against corruption with the help of Sher Khan. Obviously, this time, the action sequences are stylised, more dramatic and more impactful! Known for his love for action genre, Lakhia manages to build up the excitement level but in parts! South star Ram Charan against Big B as the protagonist of this epic movie. Weâve got to say, he brings his acting experience and does an impressive job! He looks the part and manages to pull of the action sequences very well. Ram Charanâs massive fan following will love the movie. It has also the masala elements, right from full action packed moments, to peppy dance numbers! Sanjay Dutt does a good job as Sher Khan, although we got to admit that Pran as Sher Khan remains immortal. Priyanka and Ram Charanâs chemistry is decent. Overall, Zanjeer is more of a tribute to Prakash Mehra and the cast. For those who are a big fan of the original, will be left a bit disappointed. Every time a remake comes along we get along gooey- eyed and nostalgic about the original. Zanjeer gets it right. Dead right. Unlike Ram Gopal Varmaâs remake of Sholay which was purely misguided, and Karan Malhotraâs Agneepath which was unnecessarily brutal Zanjeer is just what remake should be. Itâs respectful to the original material, which let me hasten to add, was no masterpiece and suspiciously similar to a 1967 film called Death Rides A Horse. In fact a similar film Yaadon Ki Baraat written by Salim-Javed and released during the same year 1973 as Zanjeer was far superior. Providentially Lakhiaâs Zanjeer is neither slavishly reverent to the original material nor does it take off into weird wild and wacky tangents, like the Rohit Shettyâs recent remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjeeâs Golmaal . Rather, the new Zanjeer opens up the original plot, weeds out the humbug and preserves the core of the revenge saga of an angry cop whose ire grows progressively higher as the plot moves through a series of cleverly conceived conflicts that accentuate his alienation from his khaki- coloured line of duty. No one can do to the sullen copâs role what Mr Bachchan did. But yes,even in his new avatar Inspector Vijay Khanna seethes, simmers and boils over with an indignant rage. Everything about the festering rotten âsystemâ makes him annoyed and churlish. Since Zanjeer , and its more serious-toned country-cousin Ardh Satya , numerous cops have vented their cinematic spleen in films as far-raging in quality as Singham and Police-Giri . What makes Vijay Khanna in the new Zanjeer special is the plot-mechanics which put him in time-worn situations but subject him to dramatic dynamics that give the prototypical Angry Cop a renewed riveting life of violent score-settling. That this time the Angry Cop who was played with such compelling candidness by Amitabh Bachchan in original Zanjeer ,is played by Ramcharan Teja is just a huge stroke of luck for the remake. Ramcharan brings in an entirely unique brand of silent satyagraha to his character. When we first see him on screen he wallops a goonda- politician on a busy road of Hyderabad as a hoarding of Ramcharanâs father Chiranjeeviâs film looks down on the chaotic scene. A version of Raghupati raghav plays in the background as Ramcharan lets us know without wasting time that he means business. The pace from that hardhitting moment is relentless . The momentum never slackens even when Vijay Khanna gets down to expressing tender thoughts for the fast- talking befuddled and disoriented NRI girl Mala. Playing Mala Priyanka Chopra seems to have a whole lot of infectious fun. She spells joie de vivre and looks gorgeous.Priyanka is the comic relief in this fast-paced actioner where fists and the background pount out an ominous warning. Apoorva Lakhia paces the proceedings as a rush-hour traffic of bustling events. No one has the luxury to stop and think as the narration gathers up a storm of pulpy conflicts building up to an exceptionally staged climax filmed amidst the volatile proceedings of a crowded Moharram event. From the Ganpati Viasarjan to the Moharram, Lakhiaâs interpretation of Zanjeer traverses a mammoth canvas of rapidfire images.Gururaj Joisâs camera moves dexterously but never to divert out attention from the central conflict. And Chintan Gandhiâs dialogues use one-liners judiciously , never over-doing the smart- alec retorts. The filmâs action done by Javed-Ejaz feels and looks right. The attention paid to getting the action sequences right is highly commendable . There is an elaborately staged multiple-explosion sequence in a huge Dharavi-like slum which belongs to a Van Diesel starrer. Sanjay Dutt steps splendidly into Pranâs part . His sequences though limited by the actorâs physical unavailability, show the sensitive side to his aggressive personality. The bonding between Ramcharan and Dutt comes across as effectively as the one between Ramcharan and Praiyanka and Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill. And the momentum never slackens. Fast-paced, and forever furious, Zanjeer also finds space to be excruciatingly funny. In the past there have been flicks like Don and Agneepath, which stood up to the expectations while Aag and Himmatwala fell upon its face badly. Apporva Lakhria takes the 1973 âZanjeerâ to create the same aura out of the flick that made the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan âThe angry young manâ. What we anticipated from the director was sheer maintenance of the old world charm with the fresh troupe of Ram, Priyanka and Sanjay but director stumbled here. Mala here isnât a street dancer nor is Teja an underworld don. With these couple of changes, director Apoorva Lakhria presents you the Zanjeer. We arenât complaining any new addition to the story as itâs a known fact that itâs a remake, which begins with Vijay (Ram Charan) an honest police officer who is deployed in Mumbai to unearth the oil mafia Teja (Prakash Mehra). Here he is also handed over a case of an official who is burnt alive by oil mafiaâs goons whose sole witness is Mala (Priyanka Chopra). In the meantime, he also faces Sher Khan (Sanjay Dutt) who deals in illegal cars. But the enmity turns into friendship after a hand-to-hand combat between the two. Sher Khan helps Vijay to detect Teja and to destroy him from the roots. Unfortunately the crime saga isnât wrenching which moves you from beneath. Apoorva Lakhria pack all the masala ingredients into it but gives a half-baked recipe. You will find n number of loopholes in the flick but the anticipation to witness Sanjay Dutt as Sher Khan would rag you to stick in. The sole purpose to rope in Sanjay Dutt could be recognised by the fact that Agneepath was huge success where he played a devilish Kaancha. Vijayâs anguish attitude impresses you for a while but for long it doesnât makes you serious. However there are a couple of actions scenes, which are nicely choreographed and Ram Charan looks good in it. The South actor looks commanding. He has the aura to make one feel his strength. He gives a balanced performance. Priyanka Chopra hangs in her role of Mala. She sparkles the screen with her charm whenever she appears but doesnât get too much to deliver. Sanjay Dutt as Sher Khan shouldnât be compared with Late actor Pran. He invents his character and doesnât go overboard. Prakash Raj makes his character larger than it is. Mahie Gill is good. | ||

Every time a remake comes along we get along gooey-eyed and nostalgic about the original. Zanjeer gets it right. Dead right. Unlike Ram Gopal Varmaâs remake of Sholay which was purely misguided, and Karan Malhotraâs Agneepath which was unnecessarily brutal Zanjeer is just what remake should be. Itâs respectful to the original material, which let me hasten to add, was no masterpiece and suspiciously similar to a 1967 film called Death Rides A Horse. In fact a similar film Yaadon Ki Baraat written by Salim-Javed and released during the same year 1973 as Zanjeer was far superior. Providentially Lakhiaâs Zanjeer is neither slavishly reverent to the original material nor does it take off into weird wild and wacky tangents, like the Rohit Shettyâs recent remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjeeâs Golmaal . Rather, the new Zanjeer opens up the original plot, weeds out the humbug and preserves the core of the revenge saga of an angry cop whose ire grows progressively higher as the plot moves through a series of cleverly conceived conflicts that accentuate his alienation from his khaki-coloured line of duty. No one can do to the sullen copâs role what Mr Bachchan did. But yes,even in his new avatar Inspector Vijay Khanna seethes, simmers and boils over with an indignant rage. Everything about the festering rotten âsystemâ makes him annoyed and churlish. Since Zanjeer, and its more serious-toned country-cousin Ardh Satya, numerous cops have vented their cinematic spleen in films as far-raging in quality as Singham and Police- Giri. What makes Vijay Khanna in the new Zanjeer special is the plot-mechanics which put him in time-worn situations but subject him to dramatic dynamics that give the prototypical Angry Cop a renewed riveting life of violent score-settling. zanjeer That this time the Angry Cop who was played with such compelling candidness by Amitabh Bachchan in original Zanjeer ,is played by Ramcharan Teja is just a huge stroke of luck for the remake. Ramcharan brings in an entirely unique brand of silent satyagraha to his character. When we first see him on screen he wallops a goonda-politician on a busy road of Hyderabad as a hoarding of Ramcharanâs father Chiranjeeviâs film looks down on the chaotic scene. A version of Raghupati raghav plays in the background as Ramcharan lets us know without wasting time that he means business. The pace from that hardhitting moment is relentless . The momentum never slackens even when Vijay Khanna gets down to expressing tender thoughts for the fast-talking befuddled and disoriented NRI girl Mala. Playing Mala Priyanka Chopra seems to have a whole lot of infectious fun. She spells joie de vivre and looks gorgeous.Priyanka is the comic relief in this fast-paced actioner where fists and the background pount out an ominous warning. Apoorva Lakhia paces the proceedings as a rush-hour traffic of bustling events. No one has the luxury to stop and think as the narration gathers up a storm of pulpy conflicts building up to an exceptionally staged climax filmed amidst the volatile proceedings of a crowded Moharram event. From the Ganpati Viasarjan to the Moharram, Lakhiaâs interpretation of Zanjeer traverses a mammoth canvas of rapidfire images.Gururaj Joisâs camera moves dexterously but never to divert out attention from the central conflict. And Chintan Gandhiâs dialogues use one- liners judiciously , never over-doing the smart- alec retorts. The filmâs action done by Javed-Ejaz feels and looks right. The attention paid to getting the action sequences right is highly commendable . There is an elaborately staged multiple-explosion sequence in a huge Dharavi-like slum which belongs to a Van Diesel starrer. Sanjay Dutt steps splendidly into Pranâs part . His sequences though limited by the actorâs physical unavailability, show the sensitive side to his aggressive personality. The bonding between Ramcharan and Dutt comes across as effectively as the one between Ramcharan and Praiyanka and Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill. And the momentum never slackens. Fast-paced, and forever furious, Zanjeer also finds space to be excruciatingly funny.
