From Brahmacharya to Gruhastha with full attachments. Vanaprastha is the bridge between Gruhastha and Sanyasa wherein the man has to start detaching himself, prepare himself for sanyasa,ensure his family is self-sufficient before he can totally detach himself into sanyasa..
Since,Sankara did not form attachments of gruhastha, the need for vanaprastha is obviated..
But that also limited him from understanding attachment and subsequent detachment

Being gruhastha is lot more than that. All kinds of responsibilities,love, caring and sharing joys and sorrows with the spouse, contribution to the society, having children, educating them etc.
Based on different versions of the stories, I think that lady asked Sankara the specifics of kamasutra and not
I never said Gruhastha means only sex. Gruhastha bridges the two ashramas, brahmacharya and Sanyasa. (Actually I was wrong in enlisting four ashramaas, the correct list is Brahmacharya, Gruhastha, Sanyasa and vanaprastha). But sex is the essence of Gruhastha ashrama which is the way a human would repay his 'pitru runa'. By the way, sex is not considered as obscene in Hinduism for adults. Sex is considered as one of the pious thing.

Two view points make the story and morals totally different :
One as a lesson God taught an errant Sankara with human frailties of ego and ambition
Two as a showcase for the all-knowing all-powerful Sankara
The first one makes logical, coherent sense to me , the second may work for some others ...
Interesting that even the major gurus cannot agree on the story and its purport else we would not have so many versions floating around.

The question that you have answered (rather patiently) is almost an idiotic question to ask(intentional I assume)......A human reincarnate.....performing his karma.....has to be bound to his body.....before he merges into God..........

Sankaracharya was anointed as a gnana yogi after he merged with divinity....not when he was on course of it.....
Also, Dolby's definition is entirely wrong.....gruhasthu doesn't equate to sexual pleasures....it involves a lot more....actually....gruhasthu doesn't even entail having your own kid.....!!!! |

Yes to both of the above questions. Sankara was specifically on that mission of winning spiritual debates.

As I mentioned in previous posts a sanyasin can not indulge in any of the joys/pleasures of the body, particularly sexual pleasures. They generally feel superior to the householders because they practice celibacy.
Its an age old concept that brahmacharya gives extraordinary powers to the mind. You will have clear mind, extremely high memory, superb analytical skills very high self-confidence etc. Brahmacharya accelerates spiritual progress.
Sankara was a student at that time and hence he was very strict about not adulterating his body.
He was in the middle of sadhana and had to oblige to the rules, I guess. |
