divi mama i think there is a clear cut difference between understanding sex and experiencing sex for instance, let us say if a male gynecologist is looking at a woman's private parts- he is trying to understand the functioning of her parts but where as if an ordinary person is looking at a woman's private parts, then knowingly or unknowingly he is experiencing lust or sexual pleasure. doctor is understanding and ordinary person is experiencing so sankaracharya's was trying to understand the sexual pleasure while the king's body was experiencing the pleasure hope i am clear and not confused u further | ||

I think the question is not whether he experienced it, but whether he was attached to it. Every thing we perceive through our senses is Maya. The only way to escape maya is to live in maya but not to get attached to it, the truth taught by Krishna. Perhaps Bharathi was testing his ability of non-attachment. | ||

I am not sure how we can say that he did not experience lust. I think he needed to understand that the lust, is also another alteration of Maya, which you need not have to go through a physical act, if you can control your soul. I might be wrong, but it might be a possible motive?
this is how i see it, his path of moksha needs to be giving him all the meaning of life, even every known feeling can be attained through moksha, whether it is a sensual pleasure attained through the physical body.

There are two issues here. FIrst is why shankara entered his body? IS it to answer her questions or because of lust? Second issue is, as per the story of MS, once he entered the king's body, then he came under the influence of Maya and got attached to the bodily pleasures. I was unaware of this story. My reply was for the first issue and I still stand by it. Shankara did not enter the king's body for the sake of having sex. | ||

Mrhyderabad, nice question, but as per my understanding of a yogi, he has control of himself, that is his soul. He can detach himself from the worldly body(that is the physical body). He has that power but not the physical power to kill a person, or for that matter go fetch a cup of water to satisfy his physical urge of thirst. Without the help of vishnu, he could have detached himself from the body, he could have protected his soul, but could not have protected the physical body, which he has to return to, or find another body for his soul, but with this act it is more like taking a new birth. The concept of Maya is advocated by sankaracharya is something i do not understand enough. may be i am missing something, the Maya that he seeks is not with physical elements anukuntunna. but again this is only my understanding.
definetly a valid question. when you are claiming to be a person of knowledge, that covers every know sasthra, the sasthra of physical desires is also a valid subject.

well, the story is partly true. atleast, I dont know if its true, but this is what I know. as far as I know, Bharathi is supposedly Saraswathi devi, born as bharathi due to the curse of dhurvasa. Bharati says to Sankara, who was on the verge of winning over her husband. "I am the other half of Mandana. You have defeated only one half of Mandana. Let us have a controversy". Sankara then agreed, their duel went on uninterruptedly for seventeen days. Bharati passed from one Shastra to another. At last she found out that she could not defeat Sankara. She decided to defeat him by means of the science of Kama Shastra. Sankara asked Bharati to give him an interval of one month for his preparation to hold controversy with her in Kama Shastra. She agreed. Sankara went to Kashi. He separated his astral body from his physical body by means of his Yogic powers and left his physical body in the hole of a big tree and asked his disciples to take care of that physical body. He then entered into the dead body of Raja Amaruka which was about to be cremated. The Raja rose up and all the people rejoiced at the astounding incident. The ministers and queens soon found out that the revived Raja was a different person, with different qualities and thought. Therefore, messengers were sent out to search for a human body hidden somewhere in lonely forests and caves and to burn it when found. They thought that if they did so, the new Raja might remain with them for a long time. Sankara was acquiring all the experience of love with his queens. In the midst, of those queens, Sankara entirely forgot all about his promises to his disciples about his going back to them. The disciples began to search for him. They heard about the miraculous resurrection of Raja Amaruka. They immediately proceeded to the city and had an interview with the Raja. They sang a few philosophical songs which revived the memory of Sankara. The disciples immediately repaired to the place where the physical body of Sankara was kept hidden. By that time the messengers of the queen had found out the physical body and had just begun to set fire to it. The soul of Sankara just then entered his own body. Sankara prayed to Lord Hari to help him. There was a shower of rain immediately and that extinguished the flames. Then Sankara returned to the residence of Mandana Misra. He resumed the old controversy and answered all the questions raised by Bharati satisfactorily. Maya according to Sankara is very powerful. now to debate about the objectivity, and the act itself it will be a long task. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada | ||
