At work, I use Excel spreadsheets all the while and more often than not, I end up using a great hidden feature of Excel - The “What If” tool. It allows you to change a few numbers in the spreadsheet and see the result without affecting the original data. You can just see what will be the result if you really sell 300 thousand copies of your Android app, instead of just three hundred and forty two! While the concept is incredibly cool, it is good only with data in a spreadsheet. Problems start creeping in, when you extend this analysis to your life. What if I had done it that way! What if it had not happened this way! Our mind is much more complex and powerful than Excel. It religiously responds to every What If with a incredibly visual possible “result”. It seldom happens that you do a What-If analysis of an incident, whose real result is positive. You get into this mode only when things don’t go as planned or something unthinkable happens. Ever heard of Rovio wondering What If they sold only three copies of Angry Birds? At one point in the movie, the protagonist starts doing this analysis. The scene is conceived and shot in the most realistic manner possible. It is at this juncture that I started connecting with the movie on an emotional plane. Till then, I had just been relishing a well made movie. Talaash worked big time for me. And I suspect it is because I could relate to what the protagonist was going through. I could empathize with him because I had already walked that very long road - one step at time - slow and not at all steady - all the time wondering if that road was really going anywhere. The movie could be divided into two parts (metaphorically) - The inner turmoil of a torn out couple and the mysterious police case. While I felt the case part of the script was not that enjoyable, I was moved by the first part completely because it was genuine, authentic and totally realistic. In a crucial point in the narration where a twist unfolds making the protagonist take real hard look over his shoulders while reading a message, I felt so jealous of him. I had waited for that message for a very very long time. I had looked everywhere for that elusive answer. It was later, much later that I realized that the answer had all the time been there right in front of me. The answer is simply that there is no answer. Here the protagonist was lucky to get the answer in black and white fashion perhaps that only low point of the movie. Talaash miraculously ties up all loose ends by the time the credits start rolling up. Nothing is left to dangling. Everyone and everything has answers. It seldom happens that way. Unfortunately this is where the movie feels really unrealistic. Not when you think it does! The movie is blessed with top notch acting, cinematography and sound design. The songs blend in smoothly with the narration. However, I know that a lot of people felt the movie was boring. They felt the police investigation stuff didn’t have enough meat and that the movie was barking up the wrong tree by devoting a great deal of screen space to the turmoil that the couple has to go through instead of concentrating on unravelling the case. For me, it was the other way round. And that’s the problem with Talaash. It is not for everyone. Talaash is not a thriller. It is not a mystery. It is not an action movie. It is a pretty slowly unraveling drama. You have to chew it before gulping it down. The group of people who can connect with the movie is rather small - thank God for that. I belong to that group unfortunately - and here I am typing all this out at 2 in the morning - thank God again for that! Verdict: Thumbs up from my side. PS: There is a reason why I kept this write up pretty generic. The movie has a few twists in the tale and any discussion of the plot (apart from the really vague clues in this review) will spoil the experience for you. Naaku nacchindi janaalaki nacchadu...
