Dhamarukam is an absolutely boring movie with little creativity. It is a rehash of the movies we have already seen. The story line is uncomfortably close to "Anji" and the climax is a straight lift from "Kung Fu Hustle". OK. Maybe I am being harsh. There it was Buddha. Here it is Shiva. There it was the hero's hand. Here it was the Trisool in the hero's hands.

That brings us to the leading man - Nagarjuna. He looks uninterested and repeatedly tries to tell us all that he is "Mass". We agree. Even the mannerisms and the style of acting seems to a direct lift from "Mass".

Nothing ever happens in this movie for a very very long time. The director must be commended for the almost impossible task of making the audience really feel each and every one of those two thousand years.

Platypus:

You should not watch this movie on DVD. That would be an injustice to the graphics. You should not watch this movie in Cinemas. That would be an injustice to you.

Thousands of years ago, a mighty war breaks between the angels and the demons. Angels win it comprehensively - decimating every single demon except of course one - Andhakaasura. Andhakasura vows to take revenge on the audience, I mean the angels in a way even the mighty Shiva cannot foresee. expected. Andhakasura goes to sleep in a strangely twisted cave for a couple of thousand years only to be woken up by a hilarious (unintended) Jeeva completely messing up as the general's trusted lieutenant.

While all this is happening, you see strange things unfolding on the screen where Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Moon, Venus are lined up perfectly and even shrinking in size to make them all fit on the aforementioned screen.

What follows next is pure cacophony. The chaos does not have any rhyme or reason. There are absurdities passed as divine teachings; superstitions masquerading as religious preaching. Now, if this feels like a thrilling ride despite the daylight murder of inner meaning of scriptures, you cannot be more wrong.

Nothing ever happens in this movie for a very very long time. The director must be commended for the almost impossible task of making the audience really feel each and every one of those two thousand years.

Scenes unfold on the screen at frantic pace but the story seldom moves. The camera shakes like the folks in Shock Laga ad for reasons best known to the director. Perhaps to compensate for the lifeless acting by the actors, the camera is hyperactive. It never settles down. It goes supersonic and gets cut left right and center by the editor - a narrative technique beaten to pulp by Telugu Cinema. After a while you yearn for a stationary shot - one that would let you soak in the beautiful environs on the screen or the grandeur of the passable graphics. But that moment never really comes.

Dhamarukam does not look beautiful. I mean, the shots are blurry, hazy and have a unprocessed look. Post processing leaves a lot to be desired. The graphics shots by themselves are OK. Not bad for a Telugu cinema. But shots where reality meets graphics are completely botched up resulting in a cartoonish flavor to the scene.

The climax is absolutely hilarious - again an unintended result. We are treated to a surprise visit by a particularly vicious form of Shrek - a fact duly acknowledged by the tired audience with claps and whistles. I guess they were rooting for Shrek to win but in the end, unsurprisingly Nagarjuna has the upper hand.

That brings us to the leading man - Nagarjuna. He looks uninterested and repeatedly tries to tell us all that he is "Mass". We agree. Even the mannerisms and the style of acting seems to a direct lift from "Mass".

Anushka has nothing much to do. In fact, I stand corrected. Anushka has nothing to do. She sleepwalks through the movie. The villain shouts shouts and shouts. After a while he starts shouting again. His getup is obviously inspired from the great SVR in Patala Bhairavi but that's where the similarity ends.

Songs fall absolutely flat on the screen - a pity considering how good the audio sounds. The Aghora dance in the end has some nice choreography but I suspect it is because the dance master himself is one of the aghoras.

Hilarity in the movie is experienced when the supposedly serious scenes unfold... but a sense of despair is guaranteed when the written to be humorous caricatures try to tickle your funny bone. Here's a tip to a particular sect of people who have been crying foul recently about "hurt religious sentiments". You have another movie to protest now. The movie needs a controversy badly.

You should not watch this movie on DVD. That would be an injustice to the graphics. You should not watch this movie in Cinemas. That would be an injustice to you.
