are you talking about routes like Rt-1 etc?. yes, there are no U-turns on these roads and it will be confusing for out of state drivers initially. I agree tolls and fines are more in NJ when compared to other states. |

Exactly I was just refuting your argument that big cities are the only viable option for the family reasons you quoted - because those were exactly the reasons for us moving to SA (not Dallas).My point is, you do not have to box yor options so narrowly. Opportunities are a function of skillsets and priorities - so there may be many places outside NY,Nj, bay Area that fit

career wise banking - IT lo grow avvalantey east coast is the place to be. although we have med-low cost locations in tx,fl we use it to get the grunt work like operations and admin done there |

But the rest of the places lo enni leading companies vunnayyi cheppandi...don't agree the opps are the same. Salaries are proportional to cost of living. Also we are comparing with the extremes. Not everyone in big cities commute 4hrs a day, avg of 30-40 mins at least in bayarea. At the end of the day everyone likes wherever they are, otherwise they wouldn't be there. |

So, what is your bar at? Saving 30K or 50K or 80K per year? Earning more and spending more is better than doing everything less.
This may not work always... I like to earn more, spend less, save more. I was in NY on a vacation in the month of May of this year and I spent almost $1000 on SPIRIT cruise for 2 people in NYC. I know it is very expensive just for a cruise, again I regret myself sometimes for such unusual spending. |

If you want to work in the big leagues, if you want your career to grow, if both partners want to work, if you want to have dinner together with family everyday (just not weekends), if you dont want every new job to include a move and if you want kids to be close to their culture.....metros like NY/NJ, DC, Bayarea are your options

Oh and If you are worried about flaunting about how great and smart am I by living in NY/NJ, Mind you , compare your savings with that of a person living in other states. He will be saving a lot more than you do. At the end of the day it all boils down to how much you make and how much you save.

Though My job is not in Nj/NY and not living there, I can say NJ is so far the worst place I been to
I hate to commute more than 30 min to my job 1 way..
I saw my frnds in NY/NJ commuting more than an hr and the infrastructure esp roads are worst in Nj..
For a fresher cost of living is high compared to south

Casino:tikkalodu ammukuntadu.. you get more rent than the mortgage you pay if you owning a townhouse or a condo... market lo pedithe you can always take a max 10% hit and sell the house in less than 45 days in some areas in ny/nj/ct.. ofcourse greeedy gaa poyyi overbid chesi konnaru manollu kontha mandhi, you have to blame their judgment in these cases not the area in general
After 2004 kona valla situation horrible ga undi...I know couple of people who bought houses in NY/NJ areas and could not sell it for the price they bought it for and later ended up losing some amount.
You are probably citizen and it makes sense for you to live in NY/NJ. Imagine people who just started working in NY/NJ and I bet none of them were able to save anything and ended up in paying $50k-60k debt.
Anyways,it's a bad choice for people to live in NY/NJ states if they just started off working in IT. I still feel I made a right choice by moving out of upstate NY few years ago. |

Now you do your Math comparing the living expenses and taxes in Seattle to that of NY/NJ. People in Seattle bought houses in Vancouver and sold of at record profit. I disagree on the familytimepart. How much time isspent on commute in big cities? from what my ex-roomie told me, he has to drive to another cityfor catching a train, change to another train in ny and then walk tohis office. if his wife is in labor how soon can he be with her?
