Forget the 47%. Wednesday's key number is 51%. That's Mitt Romney's support among likely voters in the latest seven-day rolling average of Gallup polling. Romney beats President Obama by six points in the latest showing the former Massachusetts governor's strongest lead in this poll to date. Obama drew 45%. The Gallup poll does not include reaction to Tuesday night's debate in which both candidates put in a strong performance. With a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points, the new poll number could be enough to get some Republicans to start dreaming about measuring the drapes at the White House. But wait: other surveys suggest the race is still a tossup. Rasmussen Reports shows Romney with a one-point lead (49% to 48%), also largely reflecting attitudes before the debate. Intrade, meanwhile, still shows Obama with about a 65% chance of reelection. Among the events remaining that could move the needle either way: the third and final Obama-Romney debate on Monday, and the jobs report for October, due Nov. 2, four days before Election Day. |
