First start with a local database, get some experience and learn basics first. then use the larger database. EK and other BO folks, Recently a friend of mine went searching for BO online training courses....and was evaluating some of the available oprions. He asked me but I didnt know. One of them said they will provide BO software with database (small) to be installed on his local PC while training ..to practice, learn and play around Another one said they will also provide access to remote BO DB server which is apparenlty huge and where all users login remotely.... The latter is more costly. Any advantages of one over the other from traiing point of view? TIA | ||

Okay guys!! Here is what I surmised. We need to study according to a well laid out plan. The most basic foundation is Relational Database skills; which falls into three modules: Query Language, ER Modeling and Dimensional Modeling. After one more class on Reports (for those who missed this weekend), I will give a 1-2 hour class on these three modules. The first module will be on SQL. For which, I will use this course as the basis. As usual, the class will be free for for anyone to attend. Just check the details that day and hop in, no need for any fanfare. But I will not be repeating the classes since it will take too long to complete the modules. SAP acquired BO almost 5 years back around 2007, but letest version SAP BI 4.. they renamed it completly .. it was release just 5 months back.. but most of customers are using XIr2, XI3.X.. but finnaly they have to upgrade SAPBI4 ( BO latest release) very soon.. | ||

for Business objects learn only version starting BOXI3.1.. don't go old versions Step1 : You need Good SQL skills and database skills ( complex sub queries, database functions, RDBMS skills.. and ER modelling and Dimensional modelling ) Step2 : for report writing you need Basic universe design skills , you should know what is universe , relations, measures and dimensions, resolving loops) for that you need to learn Universe designer step3 : writing reports - you have to learn desktop intelligence or Web intelligence to learn these things i don't know training centres in US, but get the software and install it on your PC ( windows server) go through the help.. that what i did it 9 years back i think some guys from india offering on-line course for 10 - 30K range.. if you join authorized training centres -- they will wrap up the complete course in 2- 5 days.. they will charge alot.. still you need work through help to get grip.. these course will be helpfull who already into some other BI technology , if you want learn from basic go with hyd online courses.. | ||

BW is SAP Business warehouse - thats only for SAP oriented BO is business intelligence software which can report against any database including SAP BW.. BW has limited market.. hight billing rates.. for this only for customer who already SAP.. it is data warehouse on SAP platform BO has good market in US and UK leading business intelligence softwere-- can be used develop reporting solutions againt any database and SAP BW.. nobody can teach someone every thing. i understand that. one is time, other is the proficiency itself. what i am suggesting is, just tell them what they need to learn at a fine grain level. for example, if you say, go learn BI. nobody knows what to do. but if you tell them first learn this topic, next this topic, giving them links and books, they can learn. in otherwords, instead of telling the course name, give them the syllabus. anyway, i found some syllabus by some training company above. just take a look at it and comment. may be thats all that is needed. people can take it from there. all opinions expressed are mine and only mine. not to be attributed to the other IP address sharers, my employer, or any other human, animal, robot or alien. | ||

I would say don't go with Crystal reports.. its no at all BI reporting tool. its used for develop fixed reports and not BI reports or data analysis. If you want to learn any BI reporting tool , you must have good SQL, analytical skills. if you want learn BO 1. Good SQL skills, database knowledge. 2. Universe design ( you need ER modal and dimension modelling skills) 3. here is the real-life situation. the CIO and CEO want to install a 10 Million System because some guy sole them the idea, their problems are because they do not have that system. fair enough. now a batallion of guys will come in suit, tie, boots and install that monster for 6 months charge them another 10Mil and go home. Everybody uses the system. but the CEO and CIO do not know what is going on. In other words, they need the F'ing BI and Reports.
