cheppalemu, but they are correlated. hard to imagine housing market flying when unemployment is high. but keep in mind though, houses are also commodities. at some point demand catches up and values start rising. but then, will buying/building a house make sense when compared to renting needs to be seen. If taxes go up steeply, they will deter people from owning homes. |

Debt and Deficit are different. US has 13 tr debt on 4 tr GDP. the 4% I was talking is this year's deficit. Yearly deficits add to the debt, |

Yes, its government debt to GDP ratio stands at a lofty 127% -- the highest in the euro zone outside of Greece -- but that level is more or less where it was in the late 1990s Read more: http://curiouscapitalist.blogs.time.com/2011/11/09/five-reas ons-italy-should-scare-you/#ixzz1dIf3Ek3X |

Italy's debt is 120% its value of GDP .. endi annai too big to fall/fail? thats silly .. people who consume more than what they can produce are bound to face its consequence .. its anything but natural .. bottom line : US Markets are addicted to Black Swan events. Huge money to be made on swings like today. They are creating them out of thin air. They use 401K funds to buy up. Short in own accounts. Create Black Swan events and make money. |

It very well may! The whole trouble is with a ~4% deficit of a 2 Trillion GDP, which is 8Bn Dollars! For that, the US shareholders are losing 30Bn a day! Incidentally, 8Bn is what Fannie May is asking the US this quarter to contunue running. Apple makes a net profit of 14Bn a quarter. A poor country like India has 240Bn in bank. They are the comparative figures. |

2009:Too big to fail Too fat to die ento antha Ishnu maaya
In general, any country is too big to fail. They bootstrap themselves over a period of time. I have seen many financial disasters around the world : Japan (1985), India (1987), Indonesia (1995), Malaysia (1997). Compared to these, what happened in Italy is miniscule. Actually nothing happened in Italy today/yday per se. Expecting that Italy will have to face a deficit (like USA), and expecting that Moodys will cut their rating (like US in Sept), the current lenders of Italian Bonds have sold them off for steeply lesser value than their face value. An effect of that is the rise in the yield of the loan. It's like a sudden fall in the stock price of a company expecting a loss vs actually company making a loss on the balance sheet. My take is, people will realize that they were steeply sold off, and a new set of buyers will start buying these bonds and slowly the yields will restore. |

Bar_and_ha_cub:How ?? Are you expecting the yields to go down? Unless, Italy gets a bailout, which they cannot afford, from other Euro Zone members default seems inevitable.
Italy is too big to fail. the yields will ultimately return to normalcy. So, you buy 1000 lira bonds for 500 lira now, and sell for 700 in a few months, you get almost 50% return in a few months. Invest 10Bn, you make 5Bn. Google and read how Soros made his first Billions back in 90s betting on UK Bonds |

How ?? Are you expecting the yields to go down? Unless, Italy gets a bailout, which they cannot afford, from other Euro Zone members default seems inevitable. On the political front, Berlusconi wants to go for polls - So no major budget cuts or any other actions are expected from Government. He asked IMF to oversee the economic reforms, but no other EU nation is in a position to afford the bail out( though not as much as of Italy's yields on French Bonds shot up 140 bps), the last ray of hope for IMF is China. If the uncertainty prevails with no pertinent action, Italy may default on debt payments( making the debt worthless), wonder why would anybody want to play default risk though trading at deep discount. |

Situation has become extremely complicated for average investors. Unless you have a phD in finance, you cannot relate stuff nowadays. As a result, anything can happen. for example, the press reports that the Italian Bond Yields have gone up steeply. It sounds scary, confusing and may be like good news. What actually happened was, who ever was holding the Italian Govt debt paper have dumped them below their face value. For example, a 1000 Lira 20 year 5% bond they have dumped for 600 Lira. So, when you extrapolate 5% yield of 1000 over 600, the yield is almost 9%. So, it looks like people sold gold not knowing what to do today. the matter of the fact is, italian debt paper is being dumped. This is a crazy opportunity if played well. But it could go either way. Someone like Soros, Buffett will make a few billion in a matter of weeks in this. Soros made a similar bet on on UK Bonds and became a billionaire. |
