Right after last test series of lara , it was in 2006 in pak....Lara had couple of hundreds and a double hundred and danish kaneria was molested pretty bad...there was a panel in cricinfo...there were some good n great players from past...they all got together to identify whoz the best batsman of modern era... The characteristics of a great batsman they were mentioning were as far as i remember 1)who can dominate good bowling attacks for long periods of time 2)whoz batting looks attractive 3)whom they will pay to watch and they all decided it was lara....for argument sake naaku,ek ki crciket raadhu adaledhu maadhi kabaddi batch anukunna kooda aa panel lo koochundhi great players....they chose lara... iam not saying that they cant be fickle...they might have chosen tendulkar too sometime later but wat iam saying is when lara was around , he would consistently produce those gorgeous knocks that would make cricket lovers to stop n wonder wat makes a great cricketer...statistics or the style of play...and lara has both man... | ||

i remember a quote from boris becker when he lost a match at wimbledon and the tennis world went gloomy. it was along the lines " i just lost a match. nobody died " when sachin retires, it would be one sad gloomy day for the cricket world. A good percentage of fans will need a lot of convincing that nobody is dead or more so that cricket is not dead and will still go on. sorry, mike hussey , you are an awesome player but SRT is the real Mr. Cricket. without an iota of doubt, he is the biggest star the game has seen since bradman (and arguably even bigger than the Don of cricket, himself) personally, over the past few years, tendulkar has made it easy for fans like me to come to terms with this inevitability by skipping multiple ODI series, zimbabwe tests and other such matches, hell he even skipped 20-20 world cup. and thank god for youtube and other technology, sachin's knocks will be just a click or two away. i remember i was totally gutted when sampras stopped playing tennis in 2002 (he retired in 03, but i was sure sampras wouldn't play after he won US open 2002). i boycotted tennis watching and playing till 2003 wimbledon. in 03 summer i accidentally saw this pony tailed dude play tennis on centre court like he was dancing in the ballroom. i fell in love with tennis again! c'est la vie! Coming to Batting. Openers in ODI's rarely get a chance to close out the match. So his job is to set up matches. Coming to tests, if anyone ever follows test cricket, the opposition captain gets the best of bowling, fielding as soon as Sachin walks in. And coming to the skills, see his shots and composure. Text book examples. Inkaa winning matches by leading from front lo Sachin falls behind Lara, Dravid, Laxman and even Sehwag. But that is not the criteria for the BEST batsmen. its just not about runs...its about domination ani gavaskar seppadu...and i believe it....u can score 300 but if u score in such a way like avoiding every ball outside offstump and take 500 balls to score 300 its not worth it....like sachins knock against auzz in 98 where he dominated them n still never crossed 200 is still the best when u compare his 200 odd agianst auz in aauzz where he was just avoiding every length ball and working everything that is offline towards onside....so hussey can never be better than sachin in ODIS...its just not about average...its domination...and sachin dominates in ODIs most of time... | ||

Thammudu...cricket is game of endurance..like enduring a good bowling attack for long period of time and stand tall over them..so the best batsman is someone who can dominate a bowling attack...a good bowling attack for great periods of time....when i said viv pethapam on smaller nations i meant he never able to dominate a quality bowling attack for long periods of time like he dominated against smaller nations....and never dominated a good pace attack like kapil did on hadlee or never dominated a good spinner like how desis do on warne...he will obviously have more centuries on eng or auzz or ind as he played most against them....but he was not the same against lille when he was against amarnath | ||

He has got only that century and he played almost 11 years after that knock, and his second highest score is 87. He could never replicate the feat. It is more like Gavaskar hitting a century in 86 balls. Agreed that kapil is a good hitter , but he is no way comparable to viv richards. 1985 auzasia cup...match iina 4 or 5 years ki I saw rerun...and still minadad gani six mentally haunted me for few days...inga live chusinodi paristhithi we can only imagine...i swear n iam ready to bet all my savings that if kapil had bowled that over instead of chetan we would have won that match....kapil is the only player i ever knew who has the skill and mental strength n control n poise to bowl out swingers and beat the batsman at the end of the game with an old ball.... we never lost a match when kapil bowled the last over even if it were gods were playing against...infact sir richard attenborough kurrod should make a biopic on kapil....its a fascinating story n career to share.... | ||
