But I would say having the awareness- of Autism, ADHD, ADD, and other mental/psychological problems is extremely important for all parents..understanding your child's abilities and limitations is critical so you do not try to force them into a generic hole that they are ill-built for... Unfortunately , I have very close friends who grew up in ooint families in India and developed severe Bipolar disorder, Autism related problems etc... So anta simplistic ga eliminate cheyyatam kashtam...interactn leka autism raadu , autism unte interact cheyaleru... A trip to India for such kids makes a hell lot of difference. True. And it particularly make even more difference for kids living in relatively colder states here who spend almost half of the year in closed doors with just parents because of severe winter. Very subtle to severe symptoms untayi ...classified as difficulties with social interaction, communication and imagination - parents think their kids are being naughty or obstinate or withdrawn. They have trouble understanding the non specific communications like body language, non-verbal communication , understanding subtle jokes, context specific meanings etc... It was Mother India and her populace who took care of her. Can't agree more on this. I know of a similar situation in my close relatives. The kid was diagnised prematurely of ADHD(Attention Deficit Hyperactive disorder) for not speaking at right age here. He was in India for few months and picked up amazingly and now is such a lovely, very sociable and highly intelligent kid at 4. It's kids social interaction that matters in some cases that are diagnised as learning disabilites. Offcourse autism is different. | ||

Unortho, I too visited Sweekar Upkar. The guy has been doing amazing service. But I believe he is little bit head strong, more so because of personal experience. When we took our daughter there...she just woke up from sleep and was bit cranky. This person looked at her for 30 seconds, did not even ask us what is the problem or what we are there for. We just wanted to get evaluation done. We knew that our daughter was a borderline case. He just looked at her and DECLARED that my daughter is autistic and oka ara dozen mandulu rasadu along with the tests. When they performed the tests they said she has delayed development and not autistic. 1 year from then, today my daughter is not only normal but she is super extrovert. We did not buy any medicine..nor did she take any treatment. It was Mother India and her populace who took care of her. Keeping aside my personal liking of him, I liked what he was doing for the poor and needy. So I gave a little donation of 10,000 rupees and donated all the toys of our kids that we took to India. I think it is like one of its kind in south india. I believe there is one in Bangalore..not sure about it though | ||

I warn this post won't be so pleasant, so think twice before you read, don't blame me later... I vividly remember the reaction to the thread 'How to cope up with stress inflicted by GC mess and wait', started by someone on immigrationvoice.org, sometime back... As I try to recollect that post, the reaction to that thread goes something like this: I strongly suggest you to visit the slums of Dharavi, better still if you could spend a month with them, if you can't board the flight to India immediately you may visit a place such as NY and just look at the people starving for bread. I know this is not an elegant solution for your current GC problem, but would give you some immediate relief to your stress ridden life, please let me know if you need more info or solution/s... In one of the passages in Mahabharata, yaksha asks Dharmaraju-what's the most surprising thing you see around, to which Yudhistira answers "we see people dying day in and day out, yet we don't beleive or behave as though we too are going to die one day, to me nothing is more surprising than this". In grand schema of things, this is exactly same as french existentialism... We do see kids with autism at least once in a while, yet we don't think it could happen to our kids till it hits you hard... For anyone to understand the privilege of living, keeping aside the wealth, knowledge, pleasure and other aspects that are so essential to lead a not-so-rough life, to imagine that living in itelf is a bliss, however hard that might be, one has to understand what a kid with autism or celebral palsy goes through...these kids are born inequal, stay inequal and live inequal...I always wonder how someone can work for a livelihood in a job that requires them to see so many under privileged kids for hours...for days... 4 years ago I was at sweekar-upkaar, a specialized school and hospital run by Dr Hanumantharao near Jubilee Bus stand in secuderabad for these kids, reading a quote on the wall '2 hands that serve are holier than 2 lips that pray', a quote I guess is by Mahtama Gandhi...suddenly my eyes followed 2 women, one in mid twenties and the other in late seventies, meandering through a groups of kids going through physical/occupational/speech therapies, the mother carrying a 7 year old kid on her back...I understood the situation and recognized that they are pathetically poor, as they didn't wear any chappals...while they were waiting for thier turn to see the doctor, I asked them what they do for livelihood...she said her husband is a rikshaw puller and she works in a few houses and she had to support her aged mother too, and then, as tears glistened her eyes, she went on... 'My kid never walked since he is born...and through an acquaintance of my husband we came to know about this hospital and the Dr said he would do the needful for free, but I am still willing to contribute with in my means...and I heard the doctor has miraculous midas touch and my kid would soon walk...' I felt that the kid won't walk anytime soon, though I wished he aquires cognitive abilities and motor skills...and I know that miracles are few and far between in such cases...but that naive hope in her moved me... To a lesser or greater degree shock is a constant phenomenon and is a frequent outcome in everyone of our lives and we try to come to terms with it, we survive shocks and life goes on... Knowledgeable people please correct me if I am wrong, here is my understanding on autism and CP... The cause: There are different theories, some controversial; however, while the baby's brain is being developed while in mother's womb, some cells in one part or multiple parts of the brain may be undeveloped/underdeveloped due to various reasons, which even the scientific world do not know exactly till date...some say it's hereditary and a presence of particular gene(I forgot the name) is found in those cases...For example there is a test called alpha-phetoprotien, in CA that's mandatory I guess, which will detect presence of some genes supposed to be causing conditions like down syndrome...I don't think this test will detect all the conditions...basically, whenever you see an abnormal child the problem lies in the underdevelopment of brain cells...which part of brain and to what degree will determine the type of problem... The manifestation: Depending on which cells of brain structure are malformed, unformed, and to what degree...there are different terms to describe the condition...autism, cerebral palsy, different mental conditions , epilepsy etc...In severe cases, the kid may have all of these...though doctors say they are all different, there is definitely some overlap of symptoms in the same kid... autism: pakka pillalato aadukopovadam, chesina pane mallle mallee cheyydam, self-injury chesukodam, not playing with toys, maatalu raakapovadam etc including severe mental problems... Cerebral palsy: different manifestation than above: I will make this simple, basically for anyone to move hand or leg, the signals need to be received from brain, when brain cells related to this function or undeveloped in such a kid, he can't move his leg or hand or can't sit because spine doesn;t receive signals from brain...when brain sends too many signals in too little time(an opposite condition of no signals), a condition called seizures occur, which in layman terms is called fits...the limbs may look normal to the naked eye, but for them to function they need to receive signals from brain... To arrest those too many signals, an injection is given, which may further damage the chance of signals... CP kids typically can't walk, can't sit for some years, they have low appetite...they often have autism... Both autism and CP and many more conditions(too many variations to list) may co-exist in the same kid. A different problem is malformation of spine such as sacral dimple, which can't be included in brain related problems... The cure: There is no cure simply because it's not a disease but a condition...a condition is irreversible you can only mange it...A condition is similar to amputated of leg...you can't create a leg but can manage it by an artificial limb...the main goals of treatment are to lessen associated deficits and family distress, and to increase quality of life and functional independence. I pani kooda chese vallu chaala mandi unnaru...maa akka koothuru in India..she does that a lot...very often she spends time at orphanage..because all that they need is love and care...and money cannot buy it..i know a person in hyderabad who has never celebrated his kids birthday outside..he has always celebrated in an orphanage.. his kids are now doing their Ph.d..Coincidentally his name is Gandhi.. He makes people invest in ICICI pru life...and out of his commission he will make you donate food or clothes to the needy at orphanages and physically challenged ...When we celebrated our kids birthdays in india in 2006 ..we went along with him and did the same.. if some one in Hyderabad is interested to do that(spending time)..PM me..I will let them know where they are.. | ||

yeah it’s mainly because of the diet...india lo we mainly consume home made food...not much of preservatives or harmful additives...like in fast foods available here. akkadaithe joint family setting...kids get or are forced into more interaction with relatives, grand parents, etc. they dont have a website...chennai lo chinna school adhi. Most of the pain/research etc was all done by my wife. Manamu roju anthe office lo untamu kada..she was the one who used to watch the kid at home ... I don't know the reason why Autism occurs...naa assumption enti ante..the chances of the problem getting aggravated is more likely here in the US vs in India.. | ||

The first signs appear when they are close to an year..that too if the doctor is smart enough he will recognize.. My daughter's doctor suspected it for my daughter and we were worried for a quite bit of time ...ado type mental himsa le.. Coincidentally we had to spend few months in India ..me about 5 months and my daughter about 9 months... maaki kirkiri ..ippudu soodu..autism ledu ..tokka ledu..we keep wishing that she keeps her mouth shut now ...or stops bossing over kids of her age...anduke nenu aa remedy suggest chesanu for indian kids.. | ||
