Even when Britain presence was part of Bhutan operations, they were neither completely sovereign nor a princely state of Britian. there was always a grey area. When India got Independence, the new india government got control of Princely states that fell under the domain of English crown, and Bhutan was simply not one of them. you are ignoring the point that even before the Brits defeated/annexed Nepal/srilanka/burma/tibet they existed as separate country. We as a country itself were just regrouping and if the other parties were not inclined then there is nothing we could do. That was the whole point in the framework for the Indian union. Which ever state wanted to be independent -natural boundaries decalre chesina taruvata they could be buffer states (like Junadhgarh,J/K, Baloch, sikkim, Arunachal) rest had to either go to Pakistan or India. I dont think this argument has merit Nepal was a monarchy and its king exiled to India when the revolution happend in 1950 and subsequently returned to Nepal and had absolute power, India when it formed abolished princely states so why would Nepal which did not allow democracy to flourish be a party to become an Indian state? Ceylon/Srilanka was never part of India traditionally and was seen as a separate country by the British. So the british continued to administer it till 1972 even though Srilanka got domicile status in 1948. It became a full republic only in 1972. Tibet: This was an opportunity missed - though Tibet was traditionally part of China and was under its protectorate we could have exploited the declaration of independence by Tibet and quickly annexed it or made it part of India. Nehru had his mind elsewhere and it did not help that we fought a war in 1948 within a year of getting independence and were still not really militarily strong. However we could have very easily got Tibet. Burma gained independence in 1948 and they were totally for their self-rule so would never have joined India as a state. Sikkim joined Indian Union in 1975 by itself... Nepal was extended to as far as Gorakhpur, they were strong, The Gurkhas fought valiantly on British, they became close to the Brits, they even sent their army to suppress the Indian Rebellions...their leaders always got Kingly welcome in London as a great ally to the Brits... all the brits did was they did not make Nepal as part of East India Company, but they made their ally..however, if Mountbatten would have wanted to get it done, as was his opinion because Nepal was a predominantly HINDU country in the whole planet, it would have been much better of with India, only if this gootle tuglak has asked...
