Its true and false both. False: Since there is no invalidity of PIO, its deemed as OCI by Govt of India, no change in this. True: Technically the existing PIOs would become invalid(not in the eyes of Indian Goverment) but by the International Aviation agency..In other words, all international travel documents MUST be Machine Readable from Sept 2018. Existing PIOs are not machine readable. So, you are licked at that time. | ||

if u only have PIO, convert to OCI if its free,,i did when it was free..not sure now..if not, its a new oci anyway u can appply later also.. visa for persons of indian origin is 10 yrs, multiple entry 6 month stay. and it costs 150,shipping included, comes in about 7 days. cheaper and less hassle than oci..if u want ur kids to stay more than 6 months..u can always use FFRO to extend stay..there is paper work involved at local police dept, but still nothing painful as OCI There's a cacophony in the truth, A melody in lies and it accompanies one on every journey, From the lows to the highs | ||

But PIO is invalid after September 2018 antunnadu. Vere option ledu. I guess you could go for Visa which would also be valid for 5 years at a time. OCI passport change ki 45 with shipping cost. I think Visa application costs more. | ||

I have got my new passport and my visa is on the old passport so can I travel? In fact SFO(my local) center also said that they dont want the original PIO to be sent with the application but their documents check list says to include original PIO, so, out of doubt, for safe side, Many from this area kept the original PIO with the application. CKGS verification process sent an email that I have sent non-required original PIO, to come and pick it up immediately, which I didnt do. Its just a gray area which may cut some additional process but nothing beyond. | ||

Here is what going to happen. If you send the original PIO with the original application papers, it cut shot MANY steps (after OCI return from India to CKGS) like request for original PIO (from the applicant to CKGS), CKGS verification of the Original PIO, sending it to the local embassy , returning it to CKGS etc. My OCI was returned from India to CKGS, ckgs immediately dispatched my final OCI(as they already had my original PIO in the file) immediately. I am getting original OCI and canceled old PIO in Fedex today.) | ||
