At around 9 AM, NDTV even called the polls declaring the victory of BJP-led NDA, predicting 145 seats for them. The members of the panel in the studio even started giving reasons for the defeat of JDU-RJD-Congress Mahagathbandhan. Former editor-in-chief of The Indian Express Shekhar Gupta went on to say that the arrogance of Nitish Kumar during his second term cost him his state. Even Times Now, TV Today and NewsX were showing a lead for the BJP-led NDA in Bihar.

But meanwhile, CNN-IBN was giving accurate figures telling the viewers that JDU-RJD-Congress alliance was sweeping the state. CNN-IBN Executive Editor and anchor Bhupendra Chaubey explained it to the viewers that CNN-IBN was getting the results and leads from all 243 Assembly seats through an extensive network of our sister channel ETV.

Since morning, CNN-IBN and IBNLive were miles ahead of the rest in getting the correct figures. By 9:30 AM, CNN-IBN and IBNLive got the accurate figures and told the nation that the BJP had lost the polls if we went by the leads available, this at a time when all other channels were predicting a BJP win. Surprised viewers from all over India and many parts of the world contacted us to know the real picture. What went in our favour was Network18's extensive network of reporters all over Bihar. ETV reporters were at every counting station and each Assembly seat had a dedicated correspondent tracking the counting trends. They were faster and accurate than the rest. This enabled us beat all our competing channels.

It was a bizarre morning. Prannoy Roy, Arnab Goswami, Rajdeep Sardesai and others rushed to give the elections to the BJP. Instead of recognising the initial feeds as early trends, particularly for as complex and dense a state as Bihar, these august gentlemen with decades of experience started insisting almost from the first 20 odd trends that the polls were going in favour of the BJP. And in just over an hour told their audience that the BJP had won! Or if not won yet, was almost certain to form the government given the â��trends'.

And such is the power of television that the BJP workers rushed out on to the streets in Bihar, blowing conch shells and bursting crackers. And RSS functionary Ram Madhav came out with a victory statement on one of the channels, claiming that the election was won because of the fuss created by the scientists, writers and others in returning their awards! Of course he came back a little later to concede defeat.

Yes, usually exit polls in India under estimate parties not in power..i think small % of people not comfortable to speak against the govt in surveys.
