a comment in reddit... Hi, I grew up in Gorakhpur (Yogi Adityanath's constituency). There are a few things I can say about him- He is practically worshiped in Gorakhpur. He's the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple, the largest and most influential temple in the city (if the name didn't give it away), and politics and religion make a potent combination. When they say he's a religious hardliner they aren't kidding. He has done an immense amount of work for the people of gorakhpur. Issues of corruption never arose around him. The man is the owner of pretty much half of gorakhpur (seriously, the temple owns a staggering amount of property in the city) and has never shown an inclination towards material pleasures. He's not known for toeing the party line on issues. The way he's established in gorakhpur (he's never lost an election), the BJP needs him far more than he needs them. There was some talk of how he could create a new power base in UP and challenge Modi if made CM. Interestingly, Mahant Avaidhnath, his guru, had said on his death bed that Yogi would be the future PM of the country. Take that as you will. Again, secularism really isn't a concept he subscribes to. You should read the wikipedia entry on him. I'm not really a BJP supporter or hater. While I like the fact that the party is doing a lot more than Congress ever did for the country, I'm also disturbed by incidences that betray anti-minority sentiments. So whatever I've said above is all from a neutral point of view. Feel free to ask any questions. EDIT: Adding some info since people seem interested. The man has no family. There's very little public info about his childhood. However, as is often the case with religious heads, stories and legends abound. To those who think that his religious fundamentalism is not in line with the "new" BJP. Remember, one of the most horrific communal events in Indian history has Modi's name attached to it. I have no idea how Modi has evolved as a person from the RSS cadet who became the CM of Gujarat, but the "sabka saath sabka vikaas" motto and the clean image is atleast partially a result of some excellent PR. Can Yogi get a similar makeover? I doubt that, but then again, in his recent interviews he's appeared to be a lot more neutral and has given a number of "modi-like" answers to controversial communal questions. So who knows. | ||
