I am bad with analogies but I will try this., Lets say I am living with 10 families of different socio economic conditions living in an apartment complex. I can make individual alliances with each one of 9 families or we can formulate a set of rules in agreement to all 10 families and ensure apartment complex is operating effectively. individual partnerships *may* create group wars. unhealthy partnerships that may lead shorter gains but longer disruptions. Now imagine 100 apartment complex. world is evolving. it is no longer handful countries that have significant advantage. Most of the countries are catching up. Multi lateral trade agreements are only advanced form of bilateral trade agreements. it is matter of working out the deal. One cant be better than other. Bilateral has potential to lead trading biases and eventually unhealthy partnerships. There is no single bullet point. Global trade partnerships are difficult to formulate but easier to operate. bilaterals are easier compared but difficult to operate. Populism should not have place in this decision. If it is multi nationals, it becomes more entangled. take case of NAFTA. on paper it is good. However the issue we missed. Canada wealth and economic status is similar to america Mexico wealth and economic status is lower than america by clubbing both, we screwed up as business used mexico cheap labor to move business there and mexico could not import enough american goods because of its status. imagine us having separate deals with both of them. we would have ensured that american interests are protected in both scenarios.
