Short trip to Dubai - My first visit to the Middle East. Some observations. 1. Didn't realize today (Thursday) was the weekend eve! There's almost a festive atmosphere at the office today. 2. While the temperature was bearable at 26, the humidity was not. It was almost like being back in Chennai. Walking 2 kilometers to the office from hotel was an arduous task. Will take the cab on my way back. 3. My ride from Airport to the hotel was handled by a Pakistani from Lahore. He was really interested in our currency note ban. He said he loved it and then clarified that it was not because of the hardships faced by Indians but the idea of coming up with such a gutsy move and executing it without getting cold feet. His family lives 14 kms from the Indian border. I asked him if he ever felt threatened by India. He said no. However, he says people right on the border - they fear shelling. 4. It is possible to remain cashless and Dirham less in Dubai - provided you have a Visa or Mastercard. American Express is not accepted in most places (Big hotels and restaurants are an exception) because of the higher fees it charges. 5. Pretty expensive city this is and a f&*(ing awesome skyline. 6. Palm tree resort - While the concept is exciting and amazing, it seems the downturn in economy has affected this project considerably. It looks and feels like a jaded - blast from the past - kind of relic. 7. No time to check out Atlantis or Khalifa but had great views of both from the office window.  8. Excellent roads. Dubai is full of westerners. Wherever you go, you meet only them. 80-90%. 9. Dubai Airport - It is HUGE. From touchdown to Passport control - the walk is easily more than a couple of kilometers! 10. Great food even for a vegetarian like me. 11. The Arabs I met were surprisingly open for a discussion on religion. I didn't feel threatened talking about Hinduism, my view of religion, my view of Islam and in general the concept of God. 12. Overall, felt intrigued by the city. Will plan another trip next month and will make ensure I have enough time to explore the city. |
