But in India, things work in the most unexpected way possible and it is impossible to predict an outcome of any event - It can be positive or negative. If you think that it is always negative, you are in for a very pleasant surprise.

platy.. whatever you say , there are couple of things india is bad for. 1) Dowry: I do not know when this thing would go. Indian mind is pretty much set that women is commodity. Marriages are just another business deal. 2) Corruption: People are corrupted , that results in politicians are corrupted , that finally results in Govt officials , judges and total system is corrupted. Indian rules itself encourage corruption. 3) Being responsible. Indians are not responsible citizens. When same indian lands in usa or singapore. They behave like responsible person. i am not talking abt you or some 1 in thousand cases. basically major % is irresponsible 4) coming to family etc. It becomes burden than enjoyment after couple of years. Especially when everyone is in same city. Not like village and hyderabad situation.. |

Thikka_sankara: fearing someone whose capability you don't know is different from assuming someone to be bad just because you don't know is different
maybe i used 'bad' wrongly - what i mean was one never has a kinda clean slate mindset. If i am shown a person i will definitely form a perception on that person even if i do not know 1% about him, in most cases for most people that perception is inclined towards negative ani naa udeshyam! like politician/govt officer anagane we have negative tendency, only in few scenarios like army anagane positive tendency untundhi. i might be wrong but this is what i have observed, skepticism is what majority of us feel regarding an unknown. Platy.. good perception of different thought.. you came up with good apples in a basket.. some one who would have had bad experiences in their life journey can came up with bad apples in a basket.. It is not just India.. it is more of East and West.. it is cultural differences and the way system works in different countries.. it is all about where you fit it.. Maybe, but when I interact with them - you see a different shade - one that you wouldn't associate with them. They have a "good side" that doesn't get noticed normally
i was coming from here....... until we get to know ppl we usually keep negativity towards them..... i agree about trusting stranger but that has to do more with the 'need' to be addressed, so a selfish gain is there in trusting strangers. I am flying out of India this Sunday. It is kind of a first for me. Has never been a "Non-India" employee before. In this post, I will detail out all the things I love about India. (There's a "The India I hate" thread coming up) - Focus here is people. 1. Being Close to the Family and the Extended Family: A couple of years ago, I was talking to a second cousin once removed when we met in a family function about the importance of going on family trips. (A la Brahmotsavam). He immediately latched on to the idea; made some calls and the very next morning, a six car fleet went to Mallelatheertham waterfalls. It was the best vacation we had had in a number of years and we had representation from four generations in that trip. My cousin who lives in the UK was so pissed off that his family couldn't join the fun, made a decision right then and there that within five years he would R2I. We told him "This too shall pass". So far, (it's been two years) he is still committed to the R2I plan. Thanks to that trip, I had discovered new relatives and re-discovered old ones. A niece I barely knew became a part of our "closely knit circle" thanks to this. This kind of "relatives eco system" is available (for us) only in India. Forget the trip, a year ago - I had to be hospitalized for some minor surgery. Within no time, the hospital and my residence were buzzing with four cousins. One was simply chauffering people from home to hospital. Another was handling all financial and insurance related aspects. Yet another one was just there as moral support to my wife. The said cousin in the UK - was in the hospital for some major ailment last year. There was no one to help apart from his wife. They faced some real hardship during that period. People and family - the strongest part of one's India story. It is not just the family members. People are good by nature. (SVSC dialog veskondi ikkada). You probably have a perception about Indians based on media reports and how everyone here is opportunistic and money minded. Nothing can be farther from truth. Yes, they bend rules. Yes, they take advantage of the system. But they have not given up on humanity yet. A case in point, I drive frequently between Hyderabad and Nellore with my family. When my son was a baby, we used to stop in the towns/villages on the way - mostly tea shops - and ask for hot milk. You'd be surprised to know - no one charges for milk for the baby. No one! No exception. We actually fought with one tea vendor that he should take money. It didn't feel right for us, traveling in an XUV500 top end vehicle, to exploit the kindness of a tea stall vendor. He flatly refused saying it had nothing to do with one's financial standing. "Nobody charges for milk - for babies". I was surprised and took it as a one-off incident. But after the fifth time, I gave up trying to make sense of this. Later, I come to know that wherever you go in India, this is the standard practice. Whoever says Humanity is gone to dogs, should re-assess their point of view. Several years ago in Chennai when I was still a junior level employee with a take home pay of 10K per month, I could not pay the electricity bill for a couple of months due to some unforeseen personal exigencies. One night, the power supply was cut and my wife was down with high fever. I rushed to the electricity office at 8:30pm and the lineman told me that I had to pay the dues and then someone will come and restore power the next morning. I was dejected and told him that my wife was sick. I had absolutely no clue how to handle that one night without power in May in Chennai. He gave me a long hard look; came with me to my house; restored power and made me promise him that I'd pay the dues first thing in the morning and left - refusing to accept the 50 rupees I wanted to give him. In other countries, everything works like a charm with clockwork precision. But in India, things work in the most unexpected way possible and it is impossible to predict an outcome of any event - It can be positive or negative. If you think that it is always negative, you are in for a very pleasant surprise. I have seen auto drivers (much maligned lot in Hyderabad and Chennai) who wouldn't take money for hospital rides; who wouldn't agree to leave my wife on the main road insisting to drop her in the by lane at the doorstep; For every bad incident with an auto driver, there is a lovely experience to balance it out. My monologue on people as the most important factor of India that I love cannot be complete without mentioning that fisherman who rushed to help me when I had a bad motorcycle accident on East Coast Road. I was only half-conscious thanks to a bad concussion, was repeating myself every thirty seconds; was incoherent; He made me sit in the shade, got me some water to drink and called my wife from my phone. Then he stayed with me for half an hour till my wife and a cousin rushed from Adyar. When I woke up in the ICU two days later, I had no recollection of the accident or the events that happened right after that. It was a memory I lost permanently but I had gone back to that spot right after I recovered and met that fisherman who was so happy to see me completely normal. And yesterday, when I was pulling out from Aparna Sarovar in Hyderabad, I noticed a small crowd in front of me. Apparently a scooty hit a daily wages labourer knocking her unconscious. Everyone thought she was dead. My wife sprang to action, tried to call 108 which was unreachable. Then she called Citizens Hospital. For all the perception we have about private hospitals and their greed, they responded immediately and sent an ambulance within five minutes; picked up the woman and admitted her in Citizens Hospital. We went there and checked on her immediately and found that she would be OK eventually. We offered to pay for the treatment but the hospital management told us that they would treat her free of cost. We just gave the victim's four children some money and left fully assured that they were in good hands. (Checked today and she is alright) At some point you start wondering how interesting people in India are. On one hand, 99% of the people bend at least a couple of rules every day to their favour. On the other hand, 100% of them don't think twice before stretching themselves thin for helping others. Don't form an opinion on somebody based on one bad incident folks! There might be another incident just around the corner that can change your perception 180 degrees. I think at the grassroots level we have a society where "success" is revered regardless of how questionable the means of achieving it are. We grow up in this society and lose track of what is right and what is wrong. To a rank outsider, the result is a set of highly corrupt people. However, under the surface you see that they are normal folks - just raised in a specific environment to feel that way. I reiterate - People are good by nature. What do you get in mind when you hear the word GHMC Commissioner, Nallagandla Corporator, Serilingampally MLA etc? Corruption? Maybe, but when I interact with them - you see a different shade - one that you wouldn't associate with them. They have a "good side" that doesn't get noticed normally. For me, India is let down by its people. India is made awesome by its people too. Our USP is our people. The India I love comprises all these folks. Three cheers to them.
