India had cultural and historical links with every part of the subcontinent and beyond. from kabul to to indonesia malaysia we had links. I was taking about accessibility, until radcliffe award announced India was not sure of it access to kashmir, gurdaspur tehsil which had a muslim majority awarded to India creating better access options to us. pakistan was angry at the british and we defended our position diplomatically well. what was India supposed to do, concede to pakistan ? politicians worked on realities not on rhetoric. kashmir was a possibility but more pressing issues were at home. patel was occupied with hyderabad tripura junagadh etc and stayed away from kashmir for the most part. I might be wrong to assume that patel wanted to get rid of muslim majority areas from India. but at that time there was class of hardliners who wanted to do that, that's why partition plan pushed ahead. | ||

Kashmir is the land where Sage Kashyapa did tapasya and thats how the place even got its name .. and antha back vellakkarledu history lo anukunte .. as late as year 1800s lo Maharaja Ranjith Singh ruled over parts of Kashmir. Alage Dogras had their own kingdoms around Gilgit, Baltistan, Skardu, Poonch and Varamulla (now called Baramullah after demographic change to Muslim majority). And Maharaja Hari Singh did not sign any agreement with Pakistan, while he did sign the instrument of accession with India back in 1947 September, 3 days before army of Pak (yes, the same British commandered army behind which you are trying to hide here) occupied parts of Kashmir and were only 25 kms outside Srinagar. And the most shameful thing is, Nehru did not want to send army to protect Kashmir, the idiot that he is and it is Sardar Patel who actually had to force him to say a yes and he wasted precious days, which resulted in letting Pak occupy Kashmir (in parts). nehru went to the UNO, so we lost kashmir... this is the only argument I hear every time, although facts were different, not everything is white or black... any effort to provide a clear picture will meet with jingoistic shouts immediately. calling names, branding them as traitor etc that's why I am hesitant to say any thing on that subject... but let me try, I will provide my version of things and correct me if I am wrong without calling me any names... at the time of partition, India was not interested in kashmir, practically it made sense since we had no direct link with that part of land. even patel was not interested, his argument was that India had enough problems to deal with let's not add one more trouble. moreover he was a hardliner within the congress party and like many other hardliners, he also wanted to get rid of the muslim majority areas out of india. britan made many mistakes during the partition. one of them was creating this instrument of accession formula. it was faulty, it made no sense because partition was based on religion, once west pakistan east pakistan were created, rest of the area should have been declared as India. instead of doing that, they have given a choice to princely states. this created problems for India. britan did one good thing for us, their radcliffe award opened a land route to kashmir. still India was not interested in kashmir, we rejected accession offer sent by maharaja. so maharaja signed a standstill agreement with pakistan. that agreement allowed pakistan to handle jammu & kashmir's foreign affairs and they were also providing supplies. we kept silence so everyone thought that agreement between pakistan and kashmir has a legality and merger would happen sooner or later. then junagadh happened. pakistan accepted junagadh's accession offer and India was enraged. now India started having second thoughts on kashmir. impatient pakistan sent tribals into kashmir, maharaja's base was in jammu, northern areas kashmir valley were always given him troubles. gilgit baltistan was indefencible. he signed accession treaty with India. India airlifted its army and secured srinagar. it was over enthusiastic and impatient pakistan which lost kashmir, not the otherway ! after securing srinagar, we should have gone to northern areas too... but it was not that simple. all land routes to that area are from pakistan. that gave them parity in military terms. moreover both armies were still under the control of british administration. they were not ready to fight each other. some reports say that nehru wanted launch a direct attack on pakistan from punjab and rajasthan, but again army and cabinet were not interested. it was too much of a burden on our still infant nation. then what should we have done ? we went to UNO... | ||

yes, congress was the real culprit.
