Vere desham vachina mana basic mentality maradu, we indians are big time in to education.We have been groomed that way for a long time and its not an easy baggage to let go. Few observations I have made during my interactions with friends and how I generally perceive asian families 1. Parents are too much in to controlling their kids careers ( this is especially true of first generation asian immigrants). 2. There is no other option given to the kids - get in to medicine or engineering - just like it was back home. - Eamcet( engg or mbbs). 3. No sports, even if the kid is good in some sport it ends at high school level, academics take precedence. 4. No arts - same as above 5. Deeni valla, independent thinking is gone, creativity is gone. 6. This kind of parent coaching/setting direction for kids is very prevalent in south indian familes especially tamil and telugus. Now the reality USA lo - manufacturing jobs anni (85%) gone overseas - IT jobs outsourced ( ~75%) - except some areas - Schools are moving more towards online learning - so hiring is going down - Research funding is cut down in most areas - thanks to stupid politicians who don't know jack$hit about how much time it takes to come out with some results. easy violation of IPR by other countries - china mainly followed by India - so no protection for the hard work put in by research teams, so no return on investment. With all these factors - what is the future for kids here? - It sounds pretty pessimistic. As far as we go, We have made a conscious decision not to impose our views on our kids both of them who are in high school now, the eldest one preparing to go univ in couple of years. They have never been to any of the prep programs like kumon etc. I have provided them avenues to explore their interests and form their own preferences, my eldest one now wants to be an attorney and she is working towards that, the younger one wants to go in to research in material sciences. So are we all doing something bad by controlling what our kids should do? - As a parent we want the best for our kids, however we need to know where their interest lies in and encourage them to achieve it. They can be the best in their profession if they love it not if they are forced to do it. The situation is completely different from how we were brought up and how our kids grow up here. The faculties they are exposed to are diametrically opposite to what we have been exposed to back home. They are encouraged to question and reason out while we have been "manufactured" to do exactly the opposite. Coming to college education I don't think white kids are any different than our kids as far as their interests in education goes, their priorities shift after they get out of high school, this can be attributed to lack of guidance & cost of education too most of the times. This is where most of the asian parents score high over the natives. We save up for education for the kids most of the time and fund them through college, 95% times of 100 natives are opposite of this. So it takes a lot of perseverance and focus for native kids to complete their college degrees with all these factors. So while our kids get a free ride using parents money (most of the times - exceptions always there) it is not the case for others.
