Balvinder Singh, 26, an MCA graduate who was working with a software firm in Bengaluru was today morning shot dead outside his house in Karimnagar town after he went on a rampage with a sword, first stabbing his parents and then attacking at least 20 others on the street. Police opened fire on him after their repeated appeals to him to drop the sword went unheeded and he menacingly ran towards them. Balvinder’s father suffered deep gashes on his head while his mother was stabbed in the abdomen and she is in a critical condition. “Her hand is almost severed, and she has serious stab wounds on her stomach. She is in a critical condition,’’ Karimangar Additional SP (Operations) L Subbarayudu said. Singh had come home last week and, according to his father’s statement to police, was upset and depressed that he could not crack some civil services exam. He was also upset about with his job and work at his company. Today morning at 6:30, after an altercation at home with his father Amrit Singh, he picked up a sword and viciously attacked him, leaving deep gashes. When his mother tried to stop him, he attacked her too. Later he ran out into the Lakshiminagar street where he lived and randomly slashed with the sword at passersby, especially autorickshaw drivers. “Many suffered serious injuries on their heads and chest. By the time police arrived, a crowd had gathered but no one dared to go near Balvinder as he was in no mood to listen. When he did not find anyone to attack, he smashed windshields of vehicles parked in the lane. We appealed to him several times to drop the sword. When a few policemen tried to apprehend him he attacked them also injuring two and that is when the Circle Inspector opened fire. Balvinder was shot in the shoulder and chest and he succumbed at the hospital,’’ |
