I never came across anthem before a movie. may be this is a new thing . They don't have to stand up, but it would have been nice to standup and display solidarity to the country. The behaviour of the mob and the family is unacceptable. Not standing up for national anthem is an expression of dissent but not disrespecting the nation. This is an old article on Outlook (2014) Merely not standing up when the national anthem is played, it seems on the face of it, does not amount to the offence of sedition. A legal offence, if any, will be left to the more specific law in this respect that is contained under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. Even otherwise, not standing up when the national anthem is played may be morally reprehensible but it may be an act of dissent. It may properly be within the domain of offensive speech which exists as a fundamental right. To paraphrase the inimitable Gore Vidal, it is better to burn the flag than the constitution. In Texas v. Johnson (491 U.S. 397 (1989)), Justice Brennan, agreed stating, âWe do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem representsâ. Surely our constitutional freedoms do not extend to burning our nation flag or abusing the anthem. Those same freedoms however, permit us to express our dissent with due respect. there are two aspects to this issue. 1) the mob mentality of the people who booted out the family that did not stand up. Although, this is a norm anywhere/everywhere in the world, this is one of the banes of humanity - blind sheep following others. Now, I dont intend to take a moral high ground - but atleast when there is a possible physical or emotional imminent threat to others, people need to refrain from it. my view. 2) The family that did not stand as a mark of respect for a nation's anthem. Let alone being a citizen of a country - what would be a reason for not showing a respect to a nation? A nation is based on principles of its citizenry, especially in a democracy. I cannot fathom a reason for anyone to disrespect any country - let alone from their own citizens. Its a home among many other things. You could be against a government, you could be against a certain policy, you could be against a certain social norm - but a country is always beyond that. I doubt if people truly understand what a nation is. Nobody outside a country cares who a person's parents are, what faith one identifies with, what social status they come from - they care which country one is from. In the modern world it represents your ideas and principles. Any nation that gives freedom for you to be part of forging a nations principles needs actually commands to be respected, and disrespecting it is basically disrespecting who they are. the people's reaction is not ideal, but I am glad this is a nation where one can openly show disrespect to a nation and still be part of nation. that says something about the nation - no matter how the people here reacted - atleast the nation in question has given enough liberty to show their opinion. People can afford to be "intolerant", nation cant. dont even bring religion and patriotism in to the same fold.Religion is non-negotiable treaty with the society - in most cases. Nation is not, nations evolve, citizens change nations laws and rights, i will be glad to put them at the same level when religions can handle that kind of openness, until then Religion is just a weird phenomenon to me. | ||
