Why is New England different, and why will they present a different challenge? 1. The pass rush - Brady won't hang on to the ball and scramble to extend plays, so a contained pocket, or even an outside pass rush won't do much good. He'll also be letting it go in 2 seconds or less, so Ware and Miller may tire themselves out coming close, but not close enough all night. 2. The coverage - This is why they are so difficult to stop. Their two biggest threats aren't receivers 1 and 2 on the outside. Edelman proved impossible for even Seattle to cover, because he'll line up against a teams' 3 or 4, and runs option routes almost exclusively. This means, based on the coverage and technique of the opposition, he'll slip into that gap of the field and always catch it on the run. The way the Patriots run their offense, there just isn't a way to dictate where this guy is, and he's one of the most dangerous after the catch. Gronkowski is the most difficult player to cover in NFL history. All the athletic gifts of an elite running back or receiver, the blocking and field presence of a lineman, the hands of a reliable TE, and can now line up anywhere on the field. He can't be covered 1-on-1. Double him? Sure, but then Edelman, Lewis, or Amendola get open. Again, a top cover guy can't cover him. 3. The LB's may be running into Blount all night. This is a good way to tire cover LB's out pretty fast, and leads to play action where they collapse on the line only to have Edelman or Lewis slip in behind them for a pitch-and-catch. The Patriots have basically figured out a way to design an offense and fill it with talent that nullifies the best cover threats of an opposing defense. Oh, and these guys somehow ALWAYS GET WIDE OPEN!!! It almost feels like...cheating... Can Kubiak and Phillips design a plan around this extremely flexible offense? They designed a perfect scheme against the Packers, but the Packers don't have Edelman and Gronk lining up in super favorable match ups. | ||
