I am against imposing anything based on sentiments or religion, just because majority beliefs are like that - That narrows the gap between a religious state like Pakistan or Taliban's Afghanistan - where they impose laws restricting individual's freedom on how to behave, dress and eat. Again, the sole reason for people asking of ban on cow slaughtering is that it is considered sacred by majority Hindus. "Live and let live" should be the corner stone of a secular democracy. India has become a country too conservative and sensitive - banning and controlling things left and right. They should not have banned Satanic verses in the same coin - just because it hurts some religious sentiments. Of course, the other side of argument is that it may cause civil disturbance in a highly volatile demographic country like India. | ||

Firstly, if you put a vote on beef eating ban, I am not sure if it will get majority support in India. Secondly, everything is within the framework of the said chapters of the constitution regarding respecting beliefs of all religions. Democracy does not mean that the scope of majority decisions is all encompassing. There are limitations within the framework. Just because majority does not like something, they cant rule with their whims and wishes, and force minorities to change their eating or religious habits. There are some aspects which should be off-limits to enforcing laws based on majority opinion - in a true democracy | ||

I dont know about NY, but in general there are hunting or eating bans in lot of countries regards to endangered species, or to maintain ecological balance. And, humans, or most living things on Earth cannot survive without killing of other living things - or predatory nature of most animals and humans. So, that is a natural thing - as Guriginja said, we should ensure it is done in a humane way, but not force anyone just based on our beliefs. If majority opinion should prevail - then, better declare our country as non-secular, and do it. Of course, there is pseudo secularism prevalent that needs to be corrected.
