Gangaraju Gunnam Review of Baahubali Gangaraju Gunnam 14 hrs · Baahubali. The Beginning. Of a new era in Telugu cinema. Liking a film is -- not entirely, but mostly -- subjective. One cannot always objectively prove what’s right or wrong. Even the biggest blockbuster in Indian film history will have its share of dissonant views. As for my view, I loved it. Immensely. Quite some people divided Baahubali-Part One into two parts, before and after interval. I really wouldn’t care to split a film that way, but if I had to, I loved the first half even more than the second. The whole movie is totally engrossing though, pulling you into it’s awe-inspiring world of epic characters. The romance between Sivudu and Avantika is winsome. The song leading to their consummation is erotic and playful at the same time: the matching of the tattoos like they complete each other, she using the last remnant of cloth from her disrobing to blindfold him. Gigantic as the backdrop is, it but forms a fitting frame for the larger-than-life characters and their surging emotions. The aim is not merely to stun and awe but to tell and share. Rajamouli doesn’t just focus on the humongous; he equally concentrates on the miniscule. One tiny word of a child, calling his slave â€maama’ (uncle) evokes a wave of emotion. The revelation of Sivudu’s heredity to Katappa is a high that’s higher than the waterfall. Him charging towards the hero and then slithering along on his knees towards his feet is breath-taking. And then placing Sivudu’s foot on his head, ingeniously intercut with the baby’s foot, is heart-touching. The songs have been evocatively used to underline the underlying emotions in the visuals: Sivagami feeding the two babies to the haunting â€mamathala thalli’; the waterfall ascension to the inspiring â€Dheevara’; lifting up the giant sivalingam to the chant of â€Sivuni Aana’. The battle that forms the climax for Baahubali-The Beginning is a spectacular victory for Indian cinema. The endless span of a whole countryside teeming with marauding hordes has never been seen before. The formation of the human fortress is like an engineering marvel. And the innovative use Baahubali puts incendiary tents to overcome his handicap of being given inappropriate weapons and decimate the enemy is brilliant. There are of course minor niggles, which I don’t think are important when looking at the big picture. One definite disappointment though would be the lack of a denouement. A dousing of the emotional flames so skilfully raised, a befitting retribution to the villains. Waiting one year for fulfilment is a bit cruel. May be a heart-warming hug by Sivudu to his long yearning mother Devasena could have been a salve instead. Baahubali-The Conclusion: Tomorrow. | ||

Baahubali (Hindi) has held firm on Monday with collections looking set to be close to its Friday numbers. The film should clock up 3.75 crore nett at least and may even go to 4 crore nett plus. The Telugu version has seen a drop in cities like Mumbai and Delhi as it opened to full houses on Friday. The week can do business of around 33-35 crore nett. On a trend like this the film would normally go to 65-70 crore nett lifetime as Monday figures being close to Friday suggest a 40-45% drop in week two, maybe even stronger hold as its not a huge first week but Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a big hurdle. The best business is coming in mass areas of CPCI, Maharashtra and Gujarat and Bajrangi Bhaijaan will replace it at all the major collecting single screens irrespective of collections. The film will get screenings in the big multiplexes but these are mainly in the big cities where the film is not as strong as is in the mass centers. Baahubali - Goosebumps ! Electric ! Un-bloody-missable ! Rejoice Cinema lovers ! Indian Cinema has found the true successor to the legacy of Manmohan Desai and the man has come from south . Move aside pretenders this man is the new big daddy of large canvas make believe cinema. Stop everything else and dash to the nearest theatre that is showing Baahubali , you and your kids deserve this biggest mega kings and kingdom entertainer.What an irony , the biggest summer entertainer has come just when all our summer vacations are gone and dusted. May I make a sweeping statement here that SS Rajamouli has bettered Dharam-Veer , my go to movie in the raaja-raani-kameena mantra stories of celluloid. Baahubali is a treat which satiates you and yet you want more . Oh god why did it end , dear Rajamouli I could have sat through the whole six hours together and I mean it. Right now I am wide eyed and gasping for breath. Stop here and leave - spoilers ahead. Am sorry but guess after Ghayal in 1990 and probably Lagaan in 2001 this is for the first time in two decades that I would want to probably pack my entire family up and take them to a theatre near me , unfortunately at 12.30 in the night I doubt if any theatre would do a special show for a commoner’s family. The movie begins with a woman escaping with a young infant in hand , soldiers chasing her and it is evidently established they would want to kill her and more importantly the baby.She somehow is able to make the baby survive while she probably sacrifices herself. Yes that is another beauty of Baahubali too many loose ends in the beginning which make you wonder till in the last one hour all bits fall into place and you are left awestruck by the genius of a master story teller who was actually playing with your screenplay guessing intelligence. The baby is then adopted by a village head and his large hearted hot headed compassionate woman. She knows that at the top of the seductive beautiful waterfall are the mountains where danger lurks for her son , she tries to dissuade her son from ever going on top of the waterfall but destiny has other plans Baahubali takes its inspiration from the epic Mahabharata but does not blindly copy it , but for the character of Katappa , played with remarkable restraint by Sathyaraj modelled on Bheeshma a man driven by his loyality to the Singhasan. Baahubali has suspense –thriller quality palace intrigue and the simple premise of evil v/s good grandly and passionately presented. Where do I start with the pluses of Baahubali . The biggest plus of Baahubali are its strong characters , and while establishing the iconic characters the screenplay actually moves forward , unlike other movies the story does not come to a standstill when characters are being introduced. In one swift moment the director establishes the depth of the character of Shivagami played with ferocity by Ramya Krishna you can forgive her all her Bgrade hindi movie efforts with this one. Her characters depth is put forth in two lines that she speaks in her opening scene and that is not even a minute. Rana Daggubati has probably got his most strong role in Bhallaldeva and does a great sincere job but of course Prabhas is the key scene stealer in this movie . He plays the simpleton Shivudu who is not aware of his lineage and the regal balanced crown prince Amarendra Baahubali with such balance that you feel why cannot our directors use these actors in Mumbai ? The scene where he lifts the Shivlingam and places it right under the waterfall so that his mother need not go through the pain of carrying water for abhishekam could have so easily gone overboard but Prabhas , does not come across as loud even once in the scene. Then Anushka’s Devsena who probably gets 15 minutes of screenplay but leaves solid impact for the reason that one she is a competent actress and second obviously the strong screenplay backing. The scene where Katappa walks in and offers to ensure her escape but Devsena refusing because her conviction is that her son will return one day to deliver freedom to her and justice to Mahishmati. In fact Baahubali has a very intelligently delivered plot which fluctuates from light moment romance between Tamanna and Prabhas to intense moments of revenge or a woman suffering from pain waiting for her son to return and free her from bondage. My personal favourite , of course is when Kattappa runs to kill Shivudu and realises that he is the crown prince and drops at his feet , brilliance , drama cannot get better. The other one is when Shivudu helps and rescues workers who are installing a huge statue of Bhallaldeva and how the entire city ends up chanting Baahubali much to anger to Bhallaldeva and his father Bijjaldeva. The icing on the cake is the battle in the climax , it has probably the kind of action choreography which will make battle scenes in other king-queen movies made in the last ten years seem like the movies of 50s where while punching the villain ,the leading guys would actually sau dhishum dhishum by mouth and we as kids would roll on the floor laughing. Go for Baahubali , if you want to be entertained . If you want to be awestruck. If you believe in heavy duty passionate performances. If you have always yearned for heavy duty battles of good v/s evil. If you look for dialogues that can stir you. A special word for keeravani , the same guy who shook us up north with the brilliant “awaarapan banjarapan” some ten years ago has delivered absolute heavy duty background score. Minus the background score Baahubali would have been soulless . I do not care if it is copied from some where. The background music lifts the movie and adds to the aura. At the cost of sounding bombastic and I really do not care if I do , after Sholay and the lesser successfull Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar I cannot recall a movie so brilliantly lifted and helped by its background score. I know dear Rajamouli that Mahishmati does not exist. I wish it did. BTW , the twist in the tale has now left me counting days to 2016 . Dear SSR release that one ASAP .Please. | ||
