yes bhayya....birthdays are an outcome of social conditioning....its upto the individual to celebrate it or not in whatever way he likes...but tying it to a ritual and saying u shld do this and that doesn't make sense... i didn't say whether he is right or wrong...as a person who is looking to understand what sanatana dharma is all about...what is the concept of self...i don't need all this stuff...rituals are not the only part of sanatana dharma....and celebrating birthdays according to 'Made up rituals' is certainly not of importance to a person who wants to look inwards rituals part of hinduism is something which I didn't understand till date...i got an idea that there is some symoblism to it...but some rituals like the above (birthdays) are outright nonsense....they should be left to the individual .. example : devudi chuttu 108 pradakshinalu ...idi vinapudalla bholl ani navvu vastadi...asal aa count endi..aa tiragatam endi...on one hand I find the concept of dwelling into one's own mind intriguing...on other hand rituals like this make me laugh...i'm still open to understand these rituals if at all they really have any meaning } | ||

annayya, the way we celebrate birthdays today -- is it not social conditioning? Before I moved to town/cities -- I never celebrated my birthday the way we celebrate today: My celebration was as follows: Wake up early, take a headbath, take blessings of parents, eat something that is sweet (usually paayasam), then distribute chocolates to relatives, neighbors, friends, classmates. But after I moved out of my village - I got an impression that only if I blow candles, cut a cake, everyone sing "happy birthday"....only then it's called a birthday celebration..... So is this not social conditioning? My point is - if you like it follow it - if not, ignore it. But there should be someone who needs to say what is the way as per our culture, and what is the way we're doing things today. Just because there is someone who is still reminding us of what we were -- doesn't make him wrong. It actually will act as a reference if someone wants to look back or if someone is searching for his/her roots. For wearing kumkuma - there are scientific reasons. This is a beaten to death topic. But whether one follows or not, is upto one's own self. The moment you call it "social conditioning" -- it brings a totally negative connotation. | ||

Before calling it whether its stupid or not, we need to understand the rule, No where it says Brahmins cant cross seas.. Having said that Visistha adwaita which likes of chinna jeer swamy travels a lot without any issues. The exception for traveling for those peetha adhipatis is as long as they travel to preach dharma its not an issue at all. Aagama sastra followed by few temples prevent travel because the priest cannot miss the trikala pooja. Thats the eligibility to be a priest as per the sastra the temple follows. Dharma changes as per the role you play, as per the place you are at the moment and many other factors. What is right or wrong we as humans cannot judge anything. Thats why we have follow certain norms that is defined in sanatana dharma. Itihaasa puranas will set us as examples to cross reference and check what we have to do at certain time if cannot judge. Because what is done and what is the result is known already. As I said many times before, for a human we need to follows Vedas, if not Upanishads, If not Puraanas, if not great scholars and as a last resort hear your inner voice. Supreme has his own calculations and we will have bear the result. Rest all there is no hard and fast rules and that is beauty of Sanatana Dharma. It puts own self responsible to what one does. We want to get liberated, its upto us, we want to suffer its upto us, we want to enjoy its again up to us. Thats because we are not happy that he points out at us so straight and makes us feel guilty of doing that.. He doesn't hesitate to say bluntly. where as others don't do that as blunt as he does.
