Ishan I have seen many horror stories of child psychiatry so that does colour my outlook with this. In particular I have seen ADHD kids treated with these so called drugs and they have become obese, diabetic, stunted, muted and in rare cases suicides. And i have seen one case of ADHD managed in the so called barbaric way (in western stds) in India. The parents donot know what it is and they used to chain the kid and that boy turned alright when he grew up. My bottom line is these so called autism, adhd are spectrum disorders and unless they are textbook, slamdunk cases, it is better to leave them | ||

My son never did. In fact he cant point even now despite showing him it a billion times. Do you think infants need to be around other kids to learn this? kids learn these things on their own. Being around people 'covers up' the symptoms. Back home parents dont micro-analyze things, at least when I grew up. Covering up doesnt mean they dont have ASD, especially when the kid is high-functional or has Asperger's. They just missed diagnosis. | ||

I don't think so. I have seen especially with Indian parents only one of their kids gets effected with ASD. If it is social then both kids have to be effected. I think some environmental changes effective on only some genes. Autism is suppose to be permanent and not be cured. But you can see many kids are coming out of the spectrum now. So I believe some environmental changes are temporarily effecting the kid(similar traits as ASD) especially when they are very young and they are coming out of it eventually. Though kids have similar traits as ASD, I don't think all these cases are not autism. | ||

We went to India couple of months ago for 2 weeks. No regression. In fact he had lots of fun there with many of my cousins' kids. Of course he had mild gastroenteritis for couple of days but all in all he had a great trip. If you are still anxious, there is a therapy center in Jubilee hills which can provide temporary OT and ST for few hours per day during your stay. We went to this center and the owner was very cordial and helpful. Her son is also autistic. On that day I saw many kids with autism there, dispelling another myth that "there is no autism in India". | ||

Vaccines don't cause Autism, period! Several studies disproved this conspiracy theory mainly propagated by Jenny McCarthy. Some of ASD kids have imbalance of serotonin and melatonin which can lead to erratic sleep patterns. Melatonin regulates sleep cycle. At nightfall, melatonin levels increase and we go to sleep. But my son used to sleep late and wake up in between several times and late in the morning. But it seems that he has overcome that and sleeping properly to a large extent now. | ||

Obviously ABA is the primary therapeutic option we went for. And it is showing good effect on him. The improvement is slow, but its there and moving in forward direction which is good. He is more aware of surroundings and eye contact improved and following simple instructions. He is also going to OT which is more of a fun activity to him than therapy. He is non-verbal but not ready yet for ST. But we are going to start it soon anyway. | ||

i know that i am wrong with parenting, social interaction being causes for autism...i never saw or heard about parents with autistic kida so i guess i should stop implying such things....people who have researched autism say that it is really hard to pin down the exact cause of autism spike in kids...some chalk it to over diagnosis, better informed public able to identify symptoms which a decade or two ago would have been brushed aside...whatever the case may be parents have to be more cautious with children development...we cant be in denial mode | ||

Its heartbreaking indeed. Not sure if you or anyone remembers, but back then I posted about sleep problems my son had at that time. Apparently, its related to ASD. He had sleep issues until last year. He settling now a bit. This is another misconception. I know parents who are as outgoing as there it is but still have autistic babies. Parent lifestyle and even bad parenting has nothing to do with autism etiology. | ||

sis that lady doc was money minded, no second thoughts. i got more inputs from our early steps teacher than her, in a session. anyways, let me tell my observations for everyone. they may sound trivial, but i still wanna share 1. speech delay - idi antha bhayam vaddu anukuntunna. i have seen many kids who never spoke a word till 3. i myself did not speak till 3 2. eye contact - this is something very important. janallo vunte automatic ga vallu eye contact pettukuntaaru anipistundi. when they get used to surroundings with more things than people, they obviously try to look at objects imo. 3. repetition - idi grey area imo. some kids might like some stuff and do it again and again. sametime, we cannot ignore it 4. sensory perception - this is important too. kids try to lick things either because they do not know how to feel it properly or iron deficiency/lead. we should try to make them feel its texture etc with hand more and more. it may work imo. 5. food - GI problems is not uncommon at this age. lets not link everything to autism. as many as blood/stool tests cheste, we will be in a position where we get to know . also allergy tests cheyiste better. inka food texture ni batti vallu konni tinaru. basically they do not chew stuff, and try to swallow as is. maa doc cheppatam, if they chew food the muscles in the mouth develop well. and this helps in speech. not sure if this is correct. | ||

unkel, first diagnose chesindhi Bangalore lo, then we went to another doc here in NJ. Last year 2 months ki vellindhi India with her mom. She was gettiong ABA here in US at the time through Early Intervention program... 5-6 hrs a week. Aa 2 months lo she got diagnosed in Bangalore and spent time with lots of people. But after coming back, she wouldn't come to me or recognize me I guess. She wouldn't step out of the house as she was scared. It took us good 3-4 weeks again to get her used to these surroundings. 2 months is very short, I agree, but ee changes choosaka bhayamesindhi. May be we should have started ABA there also. Platypus thatha goru okari contact ichaaru, I'm trying to find out about schools in hyd/bang. Meeku telisthey cheppandi. Medications antey, last year we tried homeo but somehow stopped after few weeks. Apart from that the doc here suggested some magnesium, calcium etc supplements. statistical models based analysis pakkana pettina, time is a factor, in the sense that the areas of brain that get mapped earlier, get bonded stronger. the earlier the stimulation to various areas of brain, the faster alternative connections are formed. intervention early stages, means understanding the kids responses and trying to stimulate based on the reactions. in regular cases change in environment can stimulate kids faster, but with autistic kids, they can completely ignore the environment and we would not know unless we are monitoring the responses. like i have said, its a case by case approach, even if changing environment works for 90% of kids, for the other 10% kids they would have been better off where they are. | ||

vunkl, 6 months is too long a time to leave someone behind, if it doesnt work, the time cant come back. time is very precious in these cases. these are difficult decisions to make, and even people going through them, people who are offering solutions are not sure what works and what doesnt. anyway, parents ki strenght wish cheyatam thappa cheyagaligindhi chala thakkuva many cases lo. very fortunate that my son has been fast track in the last few months, wish such luck to every parent struggling with this. | ||

Jalsa.. Correct diagnosis ante - Never depend on one doc, always take a second opinion that also better to take an Indian Psychiatrist opinion ( Mana telugollu chala mandi vunnaru in US). Also okasari India vachi ikkada opinion teeskondi. If possible leave the kid for a while in India (for 6 months) to see if there is any change in the situation. Environment play a good role Treatment: Never go for the drugs to start with. Family/behavioral/social/cognitive therapies should be explored first. | ||

My understanding is 'somehow' western conditions do predispose autism. In India or any other asian/african/mid east you will hardly find anybody with autism. I have never ever encountered an autistic child in my acquaintances. But, west lo now it has become very common. Geography/nature,nurture anukunta. Let me tell you this, I made around 50 phone calls to different therapists who are in-network with our insurance, their answer: Yes, I am in network, but my company is not. Basically, it's screwed up, until couple of months ago we found one "clinic" as in-network and giving ABA... OT therapists in-network leru...i have to pay out of pocket till 6000 USD (deductible and co-insurance) and then 60-40 coverage. School is helping in maintaining a order anukunta....forget ABA in school, if class strength has gone up and not 1:1, it's not helpful. We're giving outside OT, 45 mins per session 1:1, 2 times a week. 120$ per session. She's starting to respond to her therapist. Intlo ABA tho, we started potty training (first time she really peed on potty the other day), brushing, feeding with spoon, making her sign for "more", "eat" etc, point to what she wants ilaa....that seems to be helping.... Yup, two kids ki issues - one physically and the other one mentally...physical issues unna kid ayithe 19 months hospital lo ney undindhi...last year when we brought her home, during the year we had 7-8 ER visits and hospital stays with two being major stays...this year, twice so far... add to that the therapies needed for her and for the autistic one...14 hrs ABA, 2 hrs outside OT (45 mins each, costing 120$ per session).... not just physical stress, but mental stress and financial toll as well...without support, it's very difficult.
