if you don't move back to India or if you have atleast one trip abroad every six months, I would prefer PIO to OCI. Reasons 1. It takes less time to process and is cheaper. 2. if a non Indian citizen takes OCI and spends total 5 years on it(out of which, one year must be in India, not continuous one year), then they can apply for Indian Citizen ship. But id this non Indian citizens is USC, they may apply for USC again. | ||

1) First fill the N-400 form and send it to service centers. based on your address, we need to send to that center. make sure you have copy of N-400 before sending it. 2) you will get a receipt. 3) After that, you will get one letter to appear for bio metrics. after biometrics, take civics book from that center. 4) Read the book..it has civics, writing and reading english test. 5) you will get interview letter. they will test reading, writing and civics skills. they will ask most from N-400.that's the reason you should take copy of N-400. 6) Depending on the center, you can appear for oath on same day or they will send separate letter mentioning date, place and time. 7) they will take GC and give naturalization certificate. i am in this stage. right now, need to apply U.S Passport, SSN update, cancel indian passport and OCI. Thanks for your compliment...  . Old Indian Chettakari school I went to put me through the English mill. . To your question on OCI process...friends tell me a lot has changed. The easiest route would be to check your Indian Consulate service center to see what the current process is...bunch of forms to fill and cut some cashiers checks for processing. It used to be outsourced to Travisa. Not sure who is handling it these days. Would cost you and spouse about $700-800 bucks to get your OCI. Process takes 2-3 months. Your US passport goes back and forth for stamping of the OCI and you also get a separate OCI card. They will also cancel your Indian passport. HTH | ||

naa vonly engg classmate in vomerica went back to india..5 years..back..spoke to him last week, as he was on business..he has no plans to come back..(he is USC) another guy in the aptmt I used to live in..left in 2010..does not want to come back..(he went 2 months after he got GC) another guy I met last night, too early to say..he left in June..but kids already don't want to come back it seems..(he went back with USC) 3 other guys I know very closely..did not want to stay here..went back right after 6th year..all 3 of them took transfers to their Indian branch and never came back.. | ||

I believe you can preserve your GC status up to two years...
If you have any inclination of coming back since you cannot adjust to the situations there, you will know for sure with in a year or two, right?

true. Congratulations. I was just curious, thats all. For me, it is all in our hands to settle back in India or not, if we are not strong in our determination, it will be very hard. A friend of mine came back after two years, he sincerely tried but could not get adjusted to working environment, office politics, etc. | ||

My kids are citizens. right now, naaku emi cheyalo teletledu. mostly i will settle in india. if i go to india and my kids are unable to adjust ,then my GC is gone. i have to start the processing from beginning. someone already said here..one of his friend went to india with GC and they couldn't adjust.. he came back to U.S and starting his GC process again. If i want to get indian citizenship, i can stay in india(i think for 5 years), then get it. As you know, immigration process in U.S.A is becoming more pain. so, decided to take it. Not to divert, I don't get why you need US citizenship if you want to settle in India. Isn't it more advantageous to keep Indian citizenship if at all you have any plans of going back for good? | ||

Do not forget to cancel Indian Citizenship and Passport. Also apply for the OCI card. You will not need a Visa to visit India with the OCI and can stay there as long as you want as long as you keep the local USIS aware. | ||
