you can say that there is a syndicate.. but, it is universally acknowledged that gold and oil are called "fungible" commodities. no matter who where produces them,they are of equal value. their interchangeability is so high, all producers have almost the same cost structure. so, it is highly impossible to manipulate the prices of fungible commodities by non-state organizations. Unlike OPEC for oil, is there a gold cartel, I would be thrilled to know if there is one.. | ||

but the interesting thing is this: when OIL went to $130, companies like XOM made obscene profits - there were calls to impose special taxes on them. But these high gold prices did not make the stocks like ABX, NEM, GG, etc. did not budge. Are these sleeping giants? | ||

A lot of people, and central banks do not have enough gold in reserves, they are catching up. having said that, both Buffett and Soros do not consider gold as a wise investment. So, it is debatable, whether one should have gold as investment. But let's take a real life scenario. We all read about Padmanabah Swami's Treasure. What if those Rajahs used an alternate form of endowment to the God such as lands, company shares etc. instead of gold? We would have none of it today. Since they gave the endowment in Gold and other precious metals, that endowment grew nearly 10000X and survived till today. No other form of investment would have survived. That is a point worth pondering for all investors. | ||
