whoa... how did i miss this thread????? why didn't i get this idea last year... my kid went to history bee nationals... i should have started a gofundme campaign.. i missed nice vacation at people's expense...  shame on parents... if they can't afford.. then they shouldn't send the kid.. its just a couple of G's.. desis spend a lot of money on kids bday parties, sweet 16's and india trips.. this is NOTHING.. compared to other expenses... really shameful of mom & dad. | ||

1.no, schools sponsor for some student activities outside school but not everything example science, math olympiadsrobotics, spellbee etc, given the cost they ask parents to bear the cost as it is more they suggest or open fund raising activities by parent teacher associations. Lot of other parents tell winners to open such pages so they can contribute 2. Not crowd funding in particular but some hours are covered under community service hours in school and Boy Scouts etc 3. Ok, this is a competition and would cost almost same or more given both parents travel for a week or more and top of it kid need to spend lot of hours practicing tough words For spelling bee it is tough to get sponsorship as there is no gear to sell or promote so TVs and school promote the winners but cot people are asked to go for fundraisers and crowd funding All the best in your sponsorship efforts and wish your kid all the best

It depends on various factors. I went to Kilimanjaro in 2014. At that time it costed me roughly 5000 pounds including hiking gear, flights, accommodation, porters and their tips etc. I gave around 500 pounds just on tips, not that I am loaded with money, but out of sheer appreciation from how they took care of us/me. I think I spend around 2000 pounds just on my gear, jackets, boots, bags etc. There are lots of operators providing porters who charge much less but they pay very less to the porters. We picked a company that paid the porters very well and naturally they charge the customers too more than others. | ||

I have re-read the comments on that page after seeing your response. No one called the mom prostitute. So, you are making it up. Second, you gave an example of your kids teacher raising 7000 dollars for swim nationals. I did not understand it. Could you please elaborate more on that? Why did they need $7000, pool improvements etc etc ka? Other than asking for money at traffic light, what other initiatives did they take? My argument is only that it should be a two way thing. Give something back to the community when you are asking something from them. This is what I want to teach my kid. Teach them to earn the support, not just ask the community and not give anything back to them. | ||

I think I owe further clarification to my post. I have nothing against the child and I wish him all the very best in the competition. I am not sure of the road map to this competition, but even then I am no fool to not to think that he had to achieve certain milestones/challenges to get to this level. I was trying to say that before setting up the gofundme for the whole amount, there are few things that the kid/parents could do.
I was trying to say that before going for full public funding option, they should do some for personal funding options followed by sponsorship options. With sponsorship you are offering something in return to the people who are sponsoring. Like you said, if he goes on to win the competioion, his school, neighbourhood,town,state will feel proud and use him for branding, why dont the parents approach to get some sponsorship from local businesses, school etc first. Also, things like selling cakes etc will only have positive impact on the child in the long run. Even if he raises $50 dollars from such activities, the return support from community will be ten fold when they see all his attempts. My belief is when we raise funds, it should benefit in some way to the donating parties too. I do not like the idea of 100% sponsorship without giving anything back. Its purely funding your ambition without returning anything back to the community. In my example, I have few targeted businesses for sponsorship which will benefit them as well like shops that sell hiking gear would get advertisement if he manages to achieve the challenge. His school will use this oppurtunity for the coverage. So, before I think of community funding, I will target some businesses and also get him to do some activities to raise money like selling cakes (My wife would make cakes for him to go sell in school, My wife and I plan to bake cakes and sell them in office for some more sponsorship). So, sponsorship option should be explored first where there is a mutual benefit to both the parties before public funding where it doesnt give anything back to anyone other than the boy/family. This kind of help is usually when you are incapable of funding yourself and asking people to donate out of their good will heart. Finally, I want to clarify that I do not condone any negative comments on his page. But when we put something on public forum, we have to be prepared for any criticism along with praise. In this scenario, the mistake is of both the parents as they should be wise enough being in technology field to realize that anything they put on public forum can invite positive as well as negative comments. | ||

You think they would not welcome the money if some stranger donated? They posted in public domain. Comments are from public domain too. I don't condone if those comments were aimed at the kid. But at parents!!! There are enough gofundme abuse stories that deter genuine supporters from supporting genuine cases. This is abuse from my perspective. I think the parents are harming the kid by encouraging/creating this campaign. Teaching what constitutes a good donation request is also a very important lesson. My 7 year old took all her piggy bank money (50$+) and donated to cancer support at her school. I was proud of her. I asked for the reason and you know what she said? Her class will get an ice cream party if they raised the most. I was mortified but she is an innocent 7 year old. We had a teaching moment. | ||

I had to reread the post to realize you are talking in opposite.. on a quick read I thought you were supporting !! what makes you think that kid did not scale small mountains. As far I know , you have to be local chapter champion to be invited to national spelling bee. Those are his small mountains!!! He scaled them( now I don't know anything about the claim he can't spell epic That is odd . We can address that if we get there) and established a track record. I will extend this to my personal example... I live in UK and have 6 year old kid. I am planning to take him to climb kilimanjaro. I am planning to take him next year if possible. He would be the youngest in UK should he achieve this. Kilimanjaro trek is not a cheap experience and it will cost a lot of money. I will raise some funds or rather sponsorship from his school and local businesses. But before I do this, I have to show that he deserves the sponsorship and give some confidence to people to fork out money. So, this summer we are going to climb various mountains in UK. We have already trekked Snowdonia twice which is the highest mountain in Wales. Next target is Scafell Pike which is the highest in England and then BenNevis which is the tallest in Scotland and infact whole of UK. So, its a gradual process of establishing a track record and then first approach the school/local businesses for sponsorship. This is mutually beneficial as it promotes them too. WIthout doing anything states above, if I just setup a gofund me page, I am taking the easy route and how is it beneficial for my child? What am I teaching him? I still look for deals/coupons before I buy anything. So what, I am still spending my own money and the business is still making a profit ( maybe little less because of the coupons). If I setup a gofundme page for all the manufacturers to donate me coupons or simply a page for skuba diving experience, it is plain and simple.... social begging. | ||

This is how you create snowflakes who believe the community should find their desire. Before asking for gofundme, this is what I would encourage the kid to do... 1. Like someone said, weekend activities to generate money.. car wash, selling something like lemonade, cakes etc 2. setup gofundme and explain kids effort in raising funds with his hard work and then ask to fill the rest of the target amount. That is the way to make the kid learn that you need to "earn" the help and not just spread your arms for alms. It is social begging and nothing more than that. I understand the perception but that is not entirely true. Looks like the category he put in is called competetions category. Btw, He clearly mentioned lack of sponsorship in his post. He is actually touting his talent than he is showing his need. That shows tremendous self confidence. May be our perception is not totally informed one. I also understand it is normal to feel the way most felt here but there is a different angle to it. you did explore that angle in your posts and did a good job of it Gofundme is just a platform.
