I think this is related to customs declaration where you say you are not bringing in anything worth more than 20K that will remain in the country. Interesting. Either way, if you say, jewelry will not stray in the US, you should be clear. Pretty trivial. I have a related update but in USA not in India. Nothing special but a bit unusual Also 90% of times, I come thru JFK.. this was in ORD I was coming back with my daughter. Immigration officer(not the customs one at door but the main one) asked what kind of jewelery do I have ..direct question!!! I just had one necklace that my mom brought for my daughter and I did not know it's value. After his insistence, I guessed it will be about 1 - 1.5k USD. He asked me why my wife was not traveling with me(another bizzare question). He also asked , if I am carrying any of her jewelry..I said no. He said, 'I am going to repeat the question.. answer carefully' . I firmly said No..He stared at me for few seconds and said go.. pretty unusual encounter.. He was so zoned in on jewelry that puzzled me. How much jewelry does Indian folks thru ORd carry with them  This was my first such experience. I travel in and out so frequently . I Marked it as a random incident and moved on but seemed relevant for this thread!! | ||

We were in the same situation. And they stopped us in Hyderabad. So, it depends on your LUCK. As Aha said, you can try packing in small pouches.

My question is not about India-2-US where I can take my jewelry for evaluation in Hyderabad and also can get an export certificate. My question was about US-2-India about old jewelry already in USA with me that does not have export certificate. I am sure many of us do not have export certificate for old jewelry that we brought to US earlier. So far there was no issue carrying 3 -4 sets back and forth, but based on this thread looks like they are enforcing the rules now. We will carry them as usual and try our luck but want to see if there are any good advice for my scenario. | ||

Ya. I am thinking you add 1 or 2 in the carry-on and show the certificate if they ask. More often than not, they won't open and check each jewelry. Thread is all about that brother. Anyway, if you are lucky, coins teesukellina no issues. If you are not lucky like us, they will stop and harass even if you have old receipts. The only way they won't stop is if you have customs certificate with valuation form. You have get these two when you travel out of India.

My wife went to Hyderabad once with 3 oz gold and the customs officer took around $250 or so (whatever cash she has). What time & which flight you landed in Hyd? My observation is that whenever there is a flight from dubai/singapoor/arab countries the customs are very active. You just have to plan such a way to avoid those flights. If we can find some common pattern from the previous passengers we will know which flights are safe to skip the customs. I had tough time last year (dubai traffic was there at that time). But this year, I just walked out with luggage after the immigration stamping (no one stopped or checked). International passengers were very few, may be 10-15 at the max. | ||

Don't ever do it again. I underestimated them and did the same thing. Had to pay 35000 RS for a biscuit to be released. They don't even accept bribe of 15k - yes, offered bribe shamelessly but felt good when the guy outrightly rejected and insisted on us paying the duty. We fought/pleaded for two whole hours but no use. Decided not buying raw gold in us anymore | ||

If you are bringing Gold from India, try and get valuation done by authorized value estimators. Then submit that form and get a customs certificate for the listed jewelry. Without this, they are giving a lot of hard time at the time of entry (into India from abroad) Get Jewelry valued by authorized valuer. Google for "jewellery valuer hyderabad". You will get some contacts.
