Especially in the case of parents who have only one son/daughter or who have all their kids settled abroad, the parents want their kids to stay somewhere in india. ------------------------------------------------------------ ----- yes, our current lot will be the ones facing this problem big time. in 90s and 00s a ton of desis migrated to US. A lot of them will have parents reaching 70/80 years age in the next 5/10/15 years. This will be a testing time for them. Yes.. That is the practical way we think. But, our parents think the other way.. or may be most of the parents.. Especially in the case of parents who have only one son/daughter or who have all their kids settled abroad, the parents want their kids to stay somewhere in india (if not close to them) so they could get to see them on a frequent basis. | ||

So far, I have been providing financial support, one brother constructed a house for the parents at the native place. other brothers take care of day to day things. This has been going on for a while and so far so good. Now, parents are really old, started thinking about what next. Still struggling to find a solution. | ||

The first thing you would think about is your kid and kid's education bla. bla. bla. What are the other alternatives can anyone think of? | ||

memu india lo and US lo vunnamu. that way I think my parents are okay. For now they are healthy and are able to live on their own. When they hit 70 or so, they will have to live with one of us. I want them to live with me in US, but I don't know how that will pan out. Even in India, it is hard if parents are in a different town and kids are in a different town tho. What if one of the parents gets sick and can't really move to wherever the kids are? If you move you will move to Hyd or Blr or Pune. parents who are from small towns get super bored in big cities where they have no one to talk to, can't go anywhere on their own. Points to ponder. | ||

I guess most of our NRIs have been facing this issue.. on how to take care of their parents in their old age. We always think of going back to india and settle there in the next two years or three but in the back of our mind we know we are not sure. At the same time, we can't keep our parents here for the whole year because of many different issues, most of the parents dont like it here.. and some can't live in the winter here.. and some have serious health issues.. etc.. etc. So, how are you guys dealing / or planning to deal with this issue? Please share your thoughts and ideas. |
