Article Content: ----------------- The political crisis in Andhra Pradesh could be attributed to the Congress’s grandstanding on the Telangana issue. Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhara Rao was willing to break his fast days before Home Minister P Chidambaram announced the initiation of the process of formation of a separate state of Telangana on December 9. KCR had told a Congress emissary on December 6 that he would break his fast if Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a public appeal to him to do so. The Congress leadership was not ready to concede even that much to him at that point in time. Next day, at an all-party meeting in Hyderabad, most of the stakeholders, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), supported the creation of a Telangana state. When the Centre’s emissary went back to KCR to convey that the Congress president was willing to make the public appeal to him now, KCR baulked. He told the emissary that after the consensus on Telangana at the all-party meeting, Sonia’s appeal was not enough and the Centre had to do something more. On hindsight, the delay of 24 hours proved quite costly for the ruling party leadership at the Centre. | ||
