The city these days is dotted with hoardings carrying pictures of the beaming son-in-law M Anil Kumar with the message carried alongside inviting passersby for the "Twin cities Grand Christmas" and "Jesus Christ Blessings Festival". Considering that the programme will kickstart on December 10, the hoardings seem to have come up a little too early, many of them plastered all over the city a fortnight ago. "I have been noticing these large number of hoardings at prominent places and have been wondering who this Anil Kumar is," said J Krishnaswamy, a corporate executive. But what is more interesting is that Anil Kumar's attempt at ascendancy comes simultaneously with the promotion of Rajasekhara Reddy's son Jaganmohan Reddy who is being projected as a youth leader and father dear has also announced that he will contest the next Lok Sabha election from hometown Kadapa. M Anil Kumar, however, seems to have different ambitions — far away from politics. His Christian ministry through the `Anil World Evangelism' organisation is taking him places, even abroad to preach. The 36-year-old evangelist was not reachable but his office said that he was an engineer by education, This is the first time that Anil Kumar is attempting to preach at a mega event in Hyderabad: his earlier crusades last year in Bhimavaram, Rajahmundry and Warangal had pulled huge crowds. Politicians of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are seeing red. "Rajasekhara Reddy is trying to promote his son-in-law so that he can become more famous than K A Paul," TDP leader Nannapaneni Rajakumari alleged. Paul a well known preacher of the state is now having a running feud with the Congress party. "Is he being promoted close to the election to catch Christian votes?" wondered an analyst. This may or may not be true but Anil Kumar has become popular as a preacher only after pa-in-law came to power. Eight years ago, not quite a preacher then, Anil Kumar had a brush with the law and the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly was thrown into a turmoil in December 2001 because of this. It so happened that an illegal ISD racket was busted in Hyderabad following a complaint by the DoT on November 21, 2001 that few persons had misused Tata Tele Services for termination of incoming international voice calls bypassing the VSNL gateway and BSNL network. Police booked cases for violation of the Indian Telegraphic Act and Section 420 of IPC against four persons that included M Anil Kumar. And even as the son-in-law surrendered before the court, Rajasekhara Reddy rose in the Assembly to defend him describing the booking of cases against him as political vendetta. Soon after he became chief minister in 2004 and his son-in-law gained attention as an evangelist and the media started asking him about Anil Kumar's new found vocation, Rajasekhara Reddy quipped: "What's wrong?" "Anil Kumar has oratorial skills and is a good preacher. He draws huge crowds on his own," a person associated with him said. Incidentally, Anil Kumar was not born as a Christian. He got converted to Christianity after his marriage to Rajasekhara Reddy's only daughter Sharmila. He started preaching on the `calling of God.' The story of the marriage of Anil Kumar is also not without a twist. Sharmila, the story goes, had to enter into unwilling matrimony with someone else because of family pressure. This in spite of the fact that she was in love with Anil Kumar and even her father Rajasekhara Reddy doted on her. Reluctantly Anil Kumar too entered into marriage with someone else. But love, they say, is all powerful. A short while later the two got divorced and entered into fresh matrimony with each other. Rajasekhara Reddy was close at hand to bless this wedding | ||

Deccan Chronicle Article about "Brother" Anil Kumar YSR’s son-in-law a spiritual leader Hyderabad, July 4: If the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, needs any divine help during election year, he does not have to go very far to seek it. For Brother Anil Kumar, a young evangelist who attracts thousands of believers to his gospel meetings, is his son-in-law. He was born into a Hindu family and converted to Christianity after marriage. Soon after that he had a "calling from God" and became a preacher. Though he started spreading the good word much before Dr Reddy became Chief Minister, it is evident that he has grown in stature after pa-in-law took over the reins of the state. Anil Kumar has travelled the length and breadth of the State besides the United States and other countries conducting gospel meetings packed to capacity. Though he started off with a small prayer group, Anil Kumar is now one of the names to reckon with in Christian community thanks to family connections as well as his oratorical skills. Some of his gospel meetings were also attended by the Chief Minister’s wife, Mrs Vijayalakshmi, and daughter, Ms Sharmila. Anil World Evangelism is making waves and at an exclusive meeting of Christian leaders held recently, he was the toast of all eyes. "I am not just son-in-law of Chief Minister, but the son of God," was how the evangelist dramatically reacted when asked about his powerful connections. However, he went on to impulsively thank ‘mamaiah’ (and adding "sorry, the Chief Minister") for addressing the Christian leaders and promising to settle their long pending issues. In fact, he wants Christian leaders to bury their differences and work together to build a better society. "Let us put aside every kind of ego," he said. "Hey man. Let us work together. Instead of accusing one another let us start working with each other to build the Kingdom of God on this earth." The young evangelist made it clear that he was not trying to garner votes but trying to strengthen Christianity. "Ok shall we do that…will you be a partner with me," he said in true evangelical style. Anil Kumar further reiterated that this was not an election strategy. "This is not something like that and God is the witness." And he added in good measure, "God bless you." | ||
