excatly my point. Just because crystal growth doesnt seem plausible enough to be termed as life on the back of our intrepretation of just reproduction and passing of so called genetic material( even though crystals dont have a genetic code, they do have an weak albiet unmistakable equivalent in micro structure replication), on the back of consciousness planck plants fail to make the cut. In fact, all animals have discernable consciousness of fear,conduciveness etc. The fact that one can domesticate almost all creatures establishes the fact that "UNDER conducive ambiences, animals exhibit so called moral rationale on a general note." Can plants do it is a question unaswered as yet....... LWA claim that it is UNIVERSALLY agreed that plants are similar to animals is largely unfounded either philosophically or scientifically. lot of people misuse JC bose's name stating that he proved plants have life which is grossly wrong!!!!! | ||

exactly where I wanted this thread to go to!!!!!!!!! Yes, if reductionism is employed then there is no lower bound to where one can stop and that has been the boon and bane to classical science for centuries. DNA and RNA where treated as classical fundamental ensembles by a lot of physicists. Just like classical physics, Reductionism ( as u described) gave rise to tremendous difficulties in understanding the evolution of life. When u start regressing ad infinitum, will we ever have a datum on which we can understand the fundamentals of evolution, physics etc. The beauty lies in re phrasing the question and asking whether life can be explained on the back of non reductionism??? It was exaclty the way QM was invented. in tha last 40 years with QM being used more and more to explain biology, standrd intrepretations of life have been attacked. One such idea is the reductionist idea of life.....just as QM professes a dualist intreprataion of particle and its dynamics as a superposition of classical particle nature and the fuzzy wave nature, QM intrepretations of bilogy attack the problem on the plank of its structural and functional basis coupled with consciousness. As I said it is still a very nascent science but one which is being seen as the precursor for larger questions to be answered | ||

welcome to scientology bros!!!! Can we define life as basic metabolic reaction at a cellular level? Chemicals at atomic and sub-atomic level undergo reactions to produce carbon-di-oxide, water and hella lot of energy, apart from other chemicals that include minerals,salts and many others and are used and re-used elsewhere or excreted. I am very sure, metabolism at cellular level is driven by DNA. DNA is the basic map based on which, the nucleus and thereby the cell, perform their designed functions. I don't think, just because crystals can "REPRODUCE" by dividing molecular structures and generate newer structures with the exact composition is proof enough to say metabolism is active. | ||

Guri gaaru, first up, welcome back. nice to see you. Yes previous decades lo anything that reproduces,grows and passes genetic material was categorised as a living being. Then came the cases where Human vegetative states started raising tremendous issues with regards to whether a vegetative mind needs to be considered as living or not. Philosophical intrepretations apart, Doctors across the world today accept that vegetative state CAN be classified as lifeless states. For centuries, physicists know of crystals that reproduce in a sense.Any student of Metallurgy know that under controlled temperatures crystalls so called "RPEPRODUCE" into smaller crystals with exact micro structure. So can we call Crystals LIVING BEINGS???? or should we not call them LIVING BEINGS as they are keyed to external controlled ambiences. If that were the case, then evolution of human forms itself can't be taken as definition of life as the earth MAGICALLY became so conducive for our energy cycles There has been huge debate on whether non animal species can be classified as living organisms. The only standard argument for such a state was whether any species with a cell division (either miotic or meosis) can be viewed as life. Using DNA as a supportive argument is false, as only 2% of DNA material is used in genetic inheritance. Plants actually have more DNA than us. Consciousness therefore has now been accepted as the new standard in defining medicinal interpretation of life. Is that fool proof. I dont think so.... It is a very philosophical question as opposed to a deductive question ani naa udesyam.
