Satyam in reverse is Maytas, the infrastructure firm that finds itself going in reverse gear on the Hyderabad Metro Rail. The Andhra Pradesh government has finally decided that Maytas cannot execute the Rs 12000-crore project and will go in for re-bidding. Ramalinga Raju's family-owned Maytas has been offloaded from the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. This after Maytas failed to show that it can raise the financial resources for the Rs 12000-crore project by March 18. The company asked for six months grace time. D Nagender, minister-in-charge, Hyderabad, said, “The government is thinking we have to go for re-bidding in a PPP model. Maytas is unable to take up this project. We have given a time bound programme earlier. This project has to be implemented by 2011.'' Research indicates that for infrastructure projects, there is a 45 to 60 per cent increase in costs from the bidding stage to completion. Add to that delays, means the metro rail project cost could jump from the estimated Rs 12000 crore to Rs 18000 crore. Citizen groups say that money can be put to better use ... they want the government to take a relook at the viability of the Metro Rail project itself. C Ramachandriah, a member of Citizens for Better Transport, said, “Hyderabad has a very good network of rail lines that go through the core of the city unlike many other cities. Why don't we make best use of these rail lines?'' http://profit.ndtv.com/2009/06/18205808/Maytas-misses-Hydera bad-metro.html Jai TDP. Jai Jai NTR |

Hyderabad , June 17 The Andhra Pradesh government is likely to cancel the Rs 12,200-crore contract awarded to a Maytas Infra-led consortium for building the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project and may take it up on its own, possibly with some financial support from the central government. Maytas Infra, promoted by the son of Satyam scamster B Ramalinga Raju, is embroiled in a controversy as it was alleged that the company diverted funds to other group firms promoted by the Rajus. It was also alleged that the company was not having enough funds in its coffers for the project. Reliable sources indicated that the state government is contemplating to take up the project on its own."The only possible option before us now is to take up the project on our own with financial assistance from the Centre, same on the lines of the Delhi Metro Project,"a top official in the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department said on condition of anonymity. However, this could not be officially confirmed. Nor Maytas Infra could be reached for its comment. State Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, with whom lies the file related to the project, is meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Union ministers in New Delhi tomorrow and he is expected to take up the issue.
