Youngest 26/11 survivor betrayed by uncle Shai Venkatraman Wednesday, December 10, 2008 9:22 PM (Mumbai) The youngest survivor of the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai has just suffered another blow. The three-month-old baby Sheetal Yadav is out of danger and will be discharged soon. But her uncle has run away with the compensation given by the government, leaving her mother Sunita in deep trouble. Sunita herself was injured and her husband killed in the gunfire at CST station on the November 26. And the baby is unaware of all the chaos in her world. Sheetal's father was killed in the attack on Victoria Terminus; she and her mother Sunita critically injured. Sunita was trying to come to terms with the tragedy when another blow struck her. Her brother-in-law disappeared with the Rs 50,000 compensation. He has also taken with him her husband's death certificate which means Sunita cannot claim any further compensation. "I had given the cheque and documents to my father. He took them all from my father claiming he needed it for some more claims. When he was leaving for the village, I asked him for the cheque so that I could deposit it in my account. He said he did not have it," said Sunita. She does not want to file a police case because she fears retribution from her in-laws. It's also clear that she cannot go back to them. "I don't think they will accept me. I don't have any hope. Even if they do, they will want me for the money and nothing more," Sunita said. Even more telling is the reaction of her parents. "We educated her and got her married. We thought she was finally settled and our responsibilities are over. Now this has happened. She and the baby have become a burden on us. We have no choice but to look after her," said Sunita's father, Fauzdar Yadav. "If I could just get a job, I could look after my daughter on my own. The problem is we don't have any identity other than our husbands," said Sunita. Sunita's in-laws have stolen her compensation. Her parents have made it clear they consider her and Sheetal a burden. Perhaps more than her husband's death, it's this betrayal from those closest to her that has shattered Sunita the most. |
