As of today they are thinking of selling some units or as a whole company ... and at the same time... their bid for taking Chevy Chase is still in progress...
Can someone throw light on this...
That would lower their borrowing costs.Basically they get access to those bank deposits.This would in turn improve the liquidity and reduce the leverage.

Thats correct, there are primarily two reasons :
1) The one they say, we are trying to increase the market share, so we are buying this company as it is undervalued by market now.
2) Original reason(not always), Big bath, now my company is already taking losses let me wash that out by integrating the financial statements. |

Also as fas as I know Citi retail baking is one of the worst and thats why it was so keen on buying wachovia so that they can leverage wachovias retal banking sectors but that deal gone bad. |
