One more example of the greatness of Rajiv Gandhi.This was disclosed by Sam Pitroda. One of the technology missions developed an indigenous telephone exchange. Before that govt placed an order for these from Germany. Impporting them from Germany would cost Rs 3 crores. They developed indigenously for only Rs 30 lacs which could withstand our rough weather and more suitable to India. When they brought this to the attention of Rajiv, he immediately ordered them to cancel the order from Germany. | ||

One interesting thing is When they introduced telephones all over India even in remote village that were total isolated. How this impacted these villages economically, socailly and politically. There was a samll village in Karnatak that used to be totally isoalted from the urban areas and markets. The middlemen used to dictate the prices of farm products produced by farmers in those villages taking advantage of farmers' lack of knowlege about the urban markets and used to cheat them. So after setting up the phones, they watched how this helped farmers. Now farmers started calling the urbak markets to find out the prices and slowly realized how these middlemen used to cheat them. This is just one example. | ||

In fact Rajiv Gandhi was the first one to recongnize the need for liberalization earlier than any body else. He educated lot of people about this need. He should be given some credit. | ||

Lot of people really don't know Rajiv Gandhi's contributions. Probably he was one of the very few politicians to recognize that India missed industrial revolution, he did not want India to miss technological revolution. He was the first politician in the modern India to understand globalization and its impacts way back in 1986. He was a visionary. Unfortunately he was totally deceived by VP Singh. | ||
