literature and in essence knowledge is a double edged sword, only the individual wielding it has the real control if any. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |

Nice article... Literature does give you insights into other people, other lines of thought that would not have occurred to you , potentially making it easier to understand people not like you ... And for the people inclined to introspect, also helps understand your own thoughts and actions better... But does it program you to be morally better - I would say NO The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Stig:
I did not read the article, bookmarked it for future reading...the philosophical arguments aside...the main question to answer is this - as long as the book/ movie etc. does not leave us worse off than we were before reading it, then literature has much to recommend it. That is all that needs to be answered. Whether someone does indeed become morally better too, again it is upto the individual, circumstances, what context he takes each particular information etc. Again, as long as he is not morally/ ethically worse off, then any literature is good...that is why i do not look down upon folks who read a Chetan Bhagat or a Da Vinci Code....they never harmed anyone....evari ishtam valladi... |
