hinduism as it stands now, is conglomerate of many sub beliefs (each of which can itself qualify to be a mini religion)! so, delve deeply into it only if you are really interested and that too with a proper guide/help! else, chances of you (or me) getting lost are pretty much high! I assume Hindus are the least educated about their own religion when compared to others. In US, most of the private schools are catholic/christian schools and religion is one of the subject.. Why can't we have the same concept in our private schools in India. No one has to force to practice Hinduism. All we need to do is educate kids about hinduism. After that practice or not practice is their individual choice. Atleast optional subject anna vundaali. I think it is our responsibility to teach our kids about our religion.. Manam interpret/conjecture cheyyatam veru, theory veru kada..Its good to keep them separate in your mind The theory goes that there are two basic kinds of scriptures Sruti and Smriti- there are more like the Puranas, Itihasas, sistachara, etc..but these two are the top most. The words are self explanatory Sruti pertains to sound/hearing..Smriti to memory Sruti - is the heard scriptures - aka Vedas Smriti - the remembered , interpreted traditions and passed and down generations..
